I identify as a Black woman, heterosexual, Cisgender, married, and I am a parent.
It is my belief that seeking help is the first indication that you are motivated and ready to make changes in your life. My purpose here is to partner with you, while empowering you, as you move through the process of change. I will help you learn to think about and address your problems in a healthier manner. Sometimes it takes the help of a mental health professional to help you take an objective look at your circumstances and empower you so that you can take the first step necessary to make those changes.

"I just want my child to be their normal self again". That is what I often hear at the beginning of therapy. It is very difficult to know how to handle changes like anger, acting out, sadness, or keeping to themselves. These problems affect the child and everyone else involved in their daily lives. I will tailor therapy to meet you and/or your child's specific needs, and work towards getting "back to normal" (or improving on what normal has been).

Life is beautiful but often/sometimes challenging. Some days we feel confident and happy while other days we may feel alone or overwhelmed. The clients I work with are seeking new tools, skills, techniques and interventions to help them feel better, more in control and empowered on a daily basis. I work with adolescents, young adults, adults and elders experiencing life transitions, anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, low self-esteem and more. Everyone deserves to have a safe space, with unconditional support that allows them to be authentically themselves, always.

Everybody has periods in their lives where they find themselves struggling with the circumstances of life. I offer an environment that can address these issues and answers can be found in a positive and supportive atmosphere. Working on improving communication, intimacy and connection can help breathe life into your relationship, and I look forward to contributing to that journey. That journey may include the use of talk therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, EMDR, and emotionally focused therapy.

Not accepting new clients
The decision to seek counseling is often difficult and comes after much thought and consideration. It has been my experience that the relationship formed between the client and counselor plays a vital role in the effectiveness and outcome of the therapeutic experience. Therefore my goal is to create a caring and trusting relationship with my client so they feel safe, comfortable and supported.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
