I utilize a variety of therapeutic styles in my treatment approach including humanistic, relational and psychodynamic based approaches.
Across all therapeutic modalities I aim to maintain a safe space, which allows both therapist and client to collaborate and engage in natural conversation. I believe it is through these interactions where a relationship can be developed and certain insights come to light. In our work together, clients are able to learn more about their relational patterns, both through the experience of retelling their stories as well as firsthand within therapeutic interactions. As these insights provide opportunity for better understanding of current difficulties, ultimately, meaningful and empowered change can be pursued.

My theoretical approach to counseling is somewhat eclectic, but largely humanistic, existential, and integrative.
Often we seek therapy when our natural tools alone can't support us anymore. Maybe life has thrown something too big at us, or we have suffered silently for too long. I work collaboratively with clients to move towards personal growth, stress reduction and improved coping techniques. Through compassion and clinical tools I partner with clients to manage life transitions and navigate developmental processes. I work to create a safe, empowering space for my clients. It's an environment where I believe we are best positioned to access insight, strengthen our resilience, and build readiness for change.

Vanessa uses an integrative, humanistic, strength-based and harm-reduction focused approach to her therapeutic work in order to promote self-actualization.
Somewhere along our life’s journey, we may have lost our “true self.” Somewhere in our past, we may have gotten stuck, thinking “I am not my best self.” We may know exactly when this shift happened, we may not. It is my belief that being in an empathic, non-judgmental and trusting therapeutic relationship can support you in living the life you always wanted.

As an existential-humanistic therapist, I aim to guide you in exploring what it means to be human and take responsibility for your life.
Everyone deserves to live a meaningful life, no matter what we have experienced or where we may come from. Therapy can be a great place to explore your values, beliefs, and attitudes, and examine how you might reorient those concepts to align with your authentic self. My clients are the experts on their own lives, and I am here to facilitate your exploration of yourself, others, and your worldview to find meaning in life. I have worked in community mental health for six years, and I focus on trauma-informed care for those with complex trauma histories, specializing in complex trauma, grief, and existential concerns as a therapist.

An ideal client for me, would be someone who hasn't felt heard in a long time. Perhaps someone who's been told "you should do this/that.." but never asked, "what do you want?". Maybe you've never had someone that you can just vent to, and for a therapist to keep things real while still offering professional guidance. An ideal client for me would be anyone who's feeling burnt out, hopeless, or lonely and is ready to regain control of their life. Scopes: Anxiety, Depression, PTSD, Trauma, Personality/Mood Disorders, LGBTQ+ issues, Adjustment Disorder, Substance use

Practicing for over twenty years and a graduate of the University of Chicago, my therapeutic approach is psychodynamic and interpersonal. I work with adults and specialize in women's health issues, frequently addressing anxiety and depression. By focusing on present issues and using past experiences to gain insights, it is possible to create tools for resolving problems, healing emotional wounds, and building coping skills. I believe that working within the interpersonal sphere builds the understanding, confirmation and acceptance necessary for the therapeutic relationship to thrive.

Humanistic Therapists

How does humanistic therapy work?

One tenet of humanistic therapy is that people are good. The humanistic approach is concerned with a person’s ability to accept oneself. It likewise encourages a person to overcome self-criticism and self-defeating tendencies, as well as disapproval from others. This approach also emphasizes self-actualization and treating an individual as a whole person. A foundation of this therapy type: The patient is the expert in their life, and treatment often takes the individual’s lead.

Is humanistic therapy evidence-based?

Humanistic therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has found that humanistic therapy can lead to significant improvement, and for some people it can be just as effective as other therapies, such as Cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of humanistic therapy are enduring.

How long does humanistic therapy last?

The goal of humanistic therapy is to understand a person’s day-to-day experiences. While sessions can be short-term and last over a few months, therapy can sometimes continue beyond that and last up to a year or more. And because patients learn the theory behind humanistic therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is humanistic therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with humanistic therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in addressing poor self-esteem and self-sabotage, as well as improving conditions including anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can be long standing, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve learned during treatment.
