I am an experienced bilingual (Spanish-English) psychotherapist who works with clients with anxiety, depression, substance use, life transitions (immigration, divorce), parenting challenges, grief and many other concerns.
Therapy is a way of approaching those life challenges that sometimes appear overwhelming or confusing. By putting words to those feelings, you can begin to unravel patterns of behavior, relationship dynamics and decision making processes, thus allowing for meaningful change. Therapy takes place in a supportive, non-judgmental space where you are able to reflect on your concerns by exploring the thoughts and feelings you are experiencing. Treatment is based on your singular circumstances, utiliziing a psychodynamic, trauma informed approach.

I work with people who are experiencing problems because of relationship difficulties, loss, infertility, family transitions, work problems, substance use and health issues.
Change is hard. But change is necessary when we find ourselves in situations where we feel sad, anxious, angry or stuck. My ultimate goal as a therapist is to help you develop more options in life -- to help you realize your potential in love, work and play. This involves the development of new ways of thinking, feeling and behaving. I will be your collaborator in this process. I will strive to create a safe, empathic and non-judgmental environment that will allow you to identify and explore your current struggles. Working together, change is possible.

If you're struggling with substance use or behaviors that no longer serve you, my work places an emphasis on harm reduction to foster a shame-free alliance, seeking to develop a deeper understanding of that pain as you move towards behaviors that are more in alignment with your goals.
Do you find yourself struggling to navigate the uncertainty of our time? Are you feeling helpless, or even hopeless, about the future? Have past experiences halted your ability to move forward? You are not alone. I am a licensed therapist providing humanistic and psychodynamic therapy for adults, integrating a systems framework to not only meet you where you’re at but also to recognize the systemic and societal context that applies to your individual experience. I acknowledge the complexities of power dynamics while working on colonized land and am affirming of all gender identities and sexual orientations.

Life's hurdles can really take a toll on your spirit, dimming your self-belief and hope for brighter days. You might find yourself peeking out from behind a facade of "I've got it all together," while inside it feels like a chaotic jumble of emotions and doubts. I understand that feeling of not quite fitting in – whether it's due to battling with your emotions, grappling with your identity, or facing the aftermath of difficult experiences. My office can be a safe space where you're a valued individual deserving of understanding and compassion, because everyone deserves a place where they truly belong.

My style of therapy is best suited towards clients who hope to develop a meaningful therapeutic relationship that can be used to better understand and address uncomfortable feelings and problematic relational patterns. By helping clients talk about disappointing and hurtful relationships throughout their lives, I have been amazed to see how well clients can make sense of what once seemed confusing and disorienting, ultimately moving forward with greater confidence. Additionally, I have a deep respect for the healing process that ensues when people can express their feelings and thoughts free of fear or inhibition.

Are you feeling unfulfilled, stressed, or hopeless? Do you desire to find purpose, direction, or simply understand yourself better? Many of our feelings and thoughts are outside of our awareness and continue to influence our everyday choices. Left unattended, these feelings and thoughts can come out in unhealthy ways – often resulting in depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and/or low self-esteem. As a result, we can feel powerless to change our current circumstances and end up self-sabotaging what we want out of life.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
