I also greatly enjoy and excel at working with adults of all ages, especially in regard to grief and loss, spirituality issues or crises, and men's health.
Along the journey of life, some challenges and suffering are inevitable and there often are not always clear or easy answers. We want our lives to have value, meaning and purpose. Knowing these things for ourselves can be a tremendously liberating and empowering experience that gives us the hope, courage, and tenacity we need to face life's challenges. However, the process of discovering or defining these "truths" can be confusing, frustrating or even scary. We all require support and solidarity from trusted comrades during our journey. Knowing when to stop and ask for help along the way does not make us weak, it makes us strong!

I am happy to include your spirituality in your therapy but you will be the one who brings that up.
I am glad you are here. In order to know whether I am a good fit for you, let me tell you about myself and my understanding of what it means to be your therapist. After working as an R.N. and a pastor/chaplain, I realized that counseling was truly my passion. So, I went back to school – again! I received my Master’s in Social Work and have been working as a therapist for the last five years. In my practice, I see adults and children aged 10 and up. I am willing to consider seeing younger children on a case-by-case basis. I also do couple’s therapy. I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional - II and specialize in trauma.

I work with adults who are struggling with depression and change of life issues (i.e., job loss, divorce, illness), and in particular those who are experiencing grief and loss. I have a great deal of experience working with the aging adult population and the issues that accompany this phase of life. I believe that most issues have an associated spiritual component to them, and if the client wishes to incorporate spirituality into the therapeutic work, I am comfortable doing so. The short term goal of therapy is symptom reduction, while the long-term goal is transformation.

I am also passionate about navigating relationships, spirituality, and late diagnosed Autism.
Welcome! I’m so glad you have found your way here. Often we get swept up in the competing demands around us and forgo what we need. We can lose ourselves without even realizing it or maybe we never even had the chance in the first place. Before we know it, we are stuck thinking, "Why can’t I seem to do what’s most important to me? What is most important to me anyway?" My hope is that together we can find the way through to heal and create a life you want to live. I think of my role as a guide offering a new perspective. A light in the dark. I specialize in working with individuals experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, and grief.

I specialize in couples counseling, family counseling, counseling with men, and premarital counseling. I help clients make meaning of their struggles, articulate their desires, and collaborate to reach their goals. I normalize and interpret conflict in terms of differences, identity, connection, and power issues. Intimacy and anger, stress and time constraints, are often the focus of our work together. I tend to be fairly transparent and strengths-focused. I also specialize in the integration of spirituality and psychotherapy.

I work from the position that we are reincarnated Spiritual Beings immersed in a human experience. When we are consciously unaware of this truth or deny it, we experience dis-ease within us that can manifest as anxiety, depression, phobias, or thoughts, feelings, or behaviors that do not serve us well. When we do eventually remember or awaken to this truth (often by way of one or more Spiritually Transformative Experiences), our attempts to integrate it into our daily lives can be painful in many different ways. It can lead to feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, and alone.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
