I understand the healing process as one of self-determination through therapeutic empathy. Being curious while employing sensitive honesty makes me a good fit for people who are open to exploring deeper personal and interpersonal connections. The lens of attachment, psychodynamic theory, and existential thought within ecological and systemic perspectives help me appreciate the pressures that impact quality of life issues. I am interested in working with individuals, couples, and families from diverse cultural backgrounds who find themselves struggling in relationships, depression, anxiety, complex trauma, psychosis, and grief/loss.

I have over eight years of experience treating adults who are navigating mood, anxiety, trauma, and addiction-related disorders. The majority of my clients live at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities, and it is a salient part of my clinical approach to consider the implications of systemic disempowerment. Recognizing how the systems we inhabit shape our internal and external lives is critical and can be a validating, empowering experience. As your therapist, I strive to understand you in this larger context as we work together toward meaningful growth.

I have been in private practice for over 20 years and have treated thousands of clients including individuals, families, children and adults. People often come in seeking relief from a range of struggles including depression, anxiety, ADHD, and family conflicts. Through my work with many families I began to also address issues of parenting and family dynamics as well as children and adolescents facing a variety of disorders, self-esteem issues, and acting out behaviors. Over the span of my career I have also treated substance abuse, bipolar, psychotic and personality disorders.

Change is a process that begins with the way one thinks about things. We all experience times of darkness and deep sorrow. We experience anxiety and also struggle with life transitions. Healing comes when we take the time to share our stories, connect with our feelings, and explore our experiences. As you consider therapy, know that feelings of sadness, anxiety, shame, guilt, confusion, and longing are experienced by everyone. Processing what is troubling you can bring a sense of relief and balance. Self awareness can add purpose to your life.

The basis of an ideal client in my lens does not have a select issue. Everyone has their own life challenges and emotional weight they carry with them. In the end, what I want for my clients is a common goal to be the best version of themselves they can be while being open-minded in facing tasks related to that goal. Whether it is an interpersonal relationship problem, anxiety, substance abuse, etc; the ultimate goal is to be better in comparison to yourself yesterday rather than someone else. That common ideal goal is what I aim for with every client I work with through the use of problem-solving strategies and coping mechanisms.

We are all works in progress and the world around us can steer us in the wrong direction. I strive to work with my clients to find the most rewarding path and the healthiest balance of one’s needs, through learning more about oneself, others, and the world around us. It is essential to find a therapist that makes you feel validated, respected, and acknowledged by honoring your intersectional identities. As such, I strive to embody this in the therapeutic approaches that I use with my clients to uniquely address their presenting concerns.

I approach psychotherapy holistically, from the position that our emotions, thoughts, and behavior hang together in ways that make sense emotionally, even if this is not always apparent to us. Many of us who seek therapy come because we find ourselves repeating unwanted behavioral, emotional, and relationship patterns without understanding them or being able to change them. I believe, on the basis of research and my clinical work, that getting to the root of unwanted patterns is a matter of facilitating a kind of experience of their meanings for us. In psychoanalytic therapy, this experience is transformative.

Many of us have feelings and memories that are hard to sit with. Having company can make this process less frightening. I’m here to support my clients as we explore why they’re hurting, and why they’re not feeling better yet. I prefer to focus on our shared human condition instead of specific diagnoses - loneliness, pain, longing for love, pushing others away, feeling at odds with ourselves...I'm here to listen, and help each client find kindness for themself.

Life is a work in progress, and progress isn't always a linear path. It's inevitable to have hurdles along the way, and we sometimes need support to better cope with these hurdles. I'm a firm believer in You being the most important person in Your life. You matter most, you know yourself best, and are the star of your life story. I want to be able to offer an empathetic, nonjudgmental, and safe space for you to process your thoughts and feelings, adding a bit of humor along the way. I want to be along side with you, to help you see your own strength, and work collaboratively with you to help cope with the daily hurdles of life.

Psychosis Therapists

What’s the most effective treatment for psychosis?

The most effective treatment for psychosis is coordinated specialty care. In this model, a team of professionals works with a patient to address all aspects of the underlying disorder. This approach incorporates individual or group therapy, employment and education support, family support and education, medication management (which often involves low doses of antipsychotics), and case management to facilitate problem-solving as needed.

When should people seek treatment for psychosis?

People should seek immediate treatment at the earliest indication of psychosis. Symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized or blocked speech, and agitated body movements. Early signs that a person may be developing a disorder that will lead to psychosis include suspiciousness of others, memory problems and distractibility, an inability to think clearly, rapid or nonsensical speech, withdrawal from friends or family, aggression toward others, and sensitivity to bright lights or noises.

What if psychosis is left untreated?

Without treatment, psychosis can have significant repercussions, including injuries, job loss, homelessness, financial or legal trouble, ruptured relationships, and suffering for the person and their family. While early treatment for psychosis often yields the best results, there is no point past which it becomes useless to seek treatment. At any point, treatment can make a difference.

How do I get someone else to seek treatment for psychosis?

It’s extremely difficult to watch a loved one suffer from hallucinations, delusions, and other elements of psychosis—sometimes exacerbated by their fears of treatment. Have a conversation with them in a quiet space and maintain a calm, supportive tone. Share your concerns about behaviors you’ve observed, suggest treatment, and explain the potential benefits. Listen carefully to their responses. The person may not be ready after one conversation, but with time, they may come around.
