I specialize in providing therapy services to women who are pregnant, postpartum, or further along in their motherhood journey.
Being pregnant and having a baby can be a time of great joy and excitement. It can also be a time where other emotions come to the surface - sadness, overwhelm, anxiety, depression, and rage. This is more common than we may think as 1 in 5 women will experience a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder. Motherhood was not meant to be lived and experienced on your own. Having someone who understands as a mother and therapist can help you to feel like yourself again.

I enjoy working with primarily adults struggling through a life transition, college stress, medical issue, professional burnout, caregiver burnout, trauma, anxiety/perinatal anxiety, or grief. My clients desire to connect to an internal sense of sturdiness that allows them to live more empowered, hopeful and meaningful lives. I have a clinical specialty working with people who are struggling to find connection in their relationships and are at a crossroad in their life (divorce, grief & loss, new parents, affair recovery, professional burnout). I would be honored to help you make sense of your life and rebuild again.

Areas of interest: Family of origin issues, interpersonal relationship difficulties, body image concerns, college and graduate school stress, identity exploration, and pregnancy/post-partum concerns.
Many of us have experienced hardships and suffering in our lives, and sometimes we need help. I believe psychotherapy is a space that can help by providing healing and comfort to those who need it. Many things can contribute to life’s difficulties including historical, systemic, emotional, relational, and interpersonal factors. In therapy, I am interested in how these complexities impact you.

Your experiences, thoughts, and struggles are unique to you and so are your gifts, joys, and perspectives. Developing awareness around how your circumstances influence who you are helps you gain clarity and allows you to write future chapters of your life with intention. Counseling is a space to be seen without judgment and safely explore what it might look like to live into a future of intentionality and purpose. Pursuing your full, whole self is a gift you give not only to yourself but to those around you, and counseling is a great place to explore what that might look like.

Life can get messy. Maybe you found yourself in a situation you didn't choose for yourself, or maybe you can't seem to shake that gnawing anxiety or the voice that says "you will never be enough". Perhaps you found yourself reeling in the wake of someone else's choices, or maybe even your own. Or maybe you are a parent watching helplessly as you see your son or daughter struggle. That's where I come in. I value the opportunity to be invited into life's most fragile areas and walk alongside you toward freedom, wholeness and hope.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
