Is your mind at peace? Or at your wit's end? If you’re challenged by substances, a behavioral addiction, or have a family member in addiction, chances are your mind is everywhere but at peace. I totally get it. Been there and overcome it. Using a mindful, compassionate and nonjudgmental approach I can help you learn how to gain a fresh perspective on the stressors in your life. Working together, not to "get by", but to thrive. Stress, no matter its origin, is not a fact of life you have to accept. You deserve a richer, fuller life, and the skills to find a peace of mind even in the midst of life’s storms, or pandemics.

Life can be hard and overwhelming sometimes and can leave us unsure of where to turn for peace of mind. It's so easy to fall into a trap of feeling inadequate to face life's challenges when it seems that everyone else has it all together. If you are experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, substance abuse issues, codependency, mood disorders, grief, or self-esteem concerns, there is hope for you.

I have specialized in the healing of trauma for the last 31 years through individual, group, couples work. My expertise is EMDR. After 18 years of using this tool I am still amazed at how profoundly and quickly clients heal from tremendous pain and struggles. EMDR is often considered to be used only and primarily for a discreet trauma like a car accident. In fact, however, EMDR is a tool that incorporates how the brain processes information every night during REM sleep. Since our brains have REM daily, EMDR is a magnificient way to address most of life's problems.

As a counselor, my goal is to establish a warm and supportive relationship, free of judgment, and full of unconditional positive regard. By doing this, I take time to empathize with clients through their own eyes and collectively we develop an alliance and work towards goals as a team. I prefer to meet with the client first and then correspond the best theoretical orientation to the individual, couple, or situation. I believe that successful treatment needs to be personalized and that treatment needs to include and the environmental elements that are impacting the individual as well.

I believe there are many different paths an individual can take to live their best life. For individuals who are struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues, occurring separately or at the same time, finding the way to recovery can be challenging. I can help you find your best path by providing therapy sessions that are centered on you and your strengths. I also have experience in helping individuals, both women and men, who are involved in the justice system with issues of mental health and substance use make their way through court, parole and probation programs.

My focus is helping clients with depression, anxiety disorders, relationship issues, life transitions and grief/loss. I rely on collaboration and evidence-based interventions to assist adults, teens and couples in navigating their personal journeys forward while also sometimes processing the past that brought them to this point. I believe that within each of us is a library of "knowing." My job is to help clients access that authentic part of themselves, providing a "library card" of sorts, so that they can make decisions and life choices that align with their values and support their goals and hopes for the future.

Drug Abuse Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
