I’ve worked with clients dealing with mood and anxiety disorders, emotional distress, trauma, chronic stress, eating disorders and body image concerns, relationship struggles, family conflict, low self-esteem, and life transitions.
NOW accepting new clients! You have decided that you are in a place in your life where therapy could be helpful. While it may be daunting, talking with a therapist is an act of courage and an investment in your well-being. I am so proud of you for taking this first step and believe that everyone can benefit from therapy. My hope in working together is to create a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment where we can draw upon your strengths and explore behaviors, beliefs, and relationship patterns that no longer serve you.

Areas of interest/expertise: lawyers and law students, women’s issues, eating disorders, grief/bereavement, pediatric, adolescent and college mental health, relationship and interpersonal concerns, and couples work.
My theoretical orientation is eclectic and integrative incorporating interpersonal process therapy (IPT) (here and now), psychodynamic, relational and CBT models. I approach therapy from a strengths based approach, focusing on client’s inherent strengths and resiliencies rather than their weaknesses. I also utilize CBT to focus on changing negative core beliefs and cognitive distortions and DBT to teach distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal assertiveness skills. Lastly, I am very relational in my approach in order to provide clients with a corrective emotional experience and holding environment for them to feel safe, secure, empowered and validated.

My treatment process begins with a comprehensive diagnostic assessment, typically lasting one to two hours. During this assessment, I carefully evaluate your presenting concerns and symptoms to provide accurate diagnoses and formulate personalized treatment recommendations. If I determine that I am the best fit for your needs, I will suggest starting with outpatient sessions on a weekly basis, gradually transitioning to biweekly sessions as progress is made.

Waitlist for new clients
I serve clients in Ohio, Illinois, and DC. My approach to therapy is eclectic and tailored to fit each person I encounter. In general, I favor a relational approach that draws from psychodynamic perspectives. I understand how our earliest experiences and relationships can shape us, and I am deeply interested in what your early experiences and relationships taught you about the world. I also draw from third wave CBT modalities in order to assist you in unlearning those early lessons when needed. In this way, you can feel free to reshape living strategies which helped you to survive your past, but which are no longer serving you.

Without exception, all people want contentment and happiness, yet often it is elusive. Yet, there really is a roadmap to peace and harmony---and it can be taught! Conflict can be replaced with curiosity. Compassion can replace judgement. Open-heartedness can overcome disappointment. My strength is in being a guide for people who want to grow into the person they were meant to be. By attending to our minds our bodies and our spirits---in addition to having healthy relationships we can create vitality---whethere we're single or married. Teaching all people the exquisite art of connection is my passion.

Throughout our lives many of us develop defenses and behaviors to survive. We may find in time that these ways of survival no longer serve us, and our current life goals or circumstances but instead keep us feeling trapped. Our once understandable attempts to avoid pain may have left us feeling disconnected from ourselves and others. Your true self is not your survival strategies.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
