I am a licensed professional counselor that specializes in working with children with emotional and behavioral issues including those who come from hard places and have experienced various types of trauma. I operate from an attachment perspective to help children, parents and families strengthen their relationships to get their deepest needs met. Being an adoptive father I have a particular heart for adoption and foster care.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC-MHSP) in the State of Tennessee, and am a National Board-Certified Counselor (NCC). I have worked with clients of all ages in a variety of settings and currently see clients ages 8 and up. My approach to counseling is client-centered and is tailored to the needs of each individual client, drawing on my knowledge and training in different modalities, including play therapy, art therapy, CBT, ACT and EMDR. When I am not working, I enjoy a rare quiet night at home with my family, but I spend most of my time these days driving one of my kids to their many events.

I received my PhD in clinical psychology at Ohio University. I then completed a clinical psychology internship at Yale University Medical School. I have 25+ years in teaching and supervising doctoral students in UT's APA approved clinical psychology program. During that time, I have published over 100 professional books and articles on psychology and treatment.

Life transitions can be complicated. Sometimes, the most exciting changes can be the most difficult. Fear of change can result in anxiety, depression, panic attacks, acting out behaviors, or abuse of substances/alcohol. I work with clients to reduce symptoms that can often be associated with life transitions. I use cognitive behavioral, solution focused, and reality based therapies with my clients to assist in improving communication, increasing coping skills, and to enhance work, school, or home relationships.

An ideal client would be anyone seeking growth in their life. I am a faith based therapist who fully believes that women's rights are human rights, Black Lives Matter, Love is Love, and science is real. I was raised in a protestant church try live a Christ filled life free of legalism and following the simple motto "Love God, Love Others." I practice a non judgmental approach with all people regardless of spirituality, race, sexual orientation and gender. I respect that faith inclusion in our work is completely your choice and work with people of faith, people questioning faith and people without specific faith practices.

For more than twenty years I have had the privilege of working as a psychologist. My clients come to therapy with a number of different concerns and needs including mood disorders, trauma, relationship and family issues, transitions and personal growth. My intent is to work collaboratively with my clients toward symptom reduction and an improved sense of wellbeing and personal and relational healing.

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years of experience in the field I strive to provide informed and evidence based treatment to clients of diverse backgrounds in a safe, supportive, and accepting environment. Therapy is a unique experience in which we can create the space that we don't often make for ourselves otherwise to stay with and explore our thoughts, feelings, and experiences. I recognize that seeking support can be difficult and I truly value the positive feedback my clients have provided regarding their feelings of comfort and safety in their work with me.

I have been in professional psychological practice since 1979, been married many years, raised 2 children and shared in raising 3 step-children, so I have many years of clinical and personal experience on which to draw. However, I am always learning and growing, and enjoy sharing the journey of self-discovery with my clients/patients. I tailor my psychological treatment with individuals (adults, adolescents, and children), couples, and families to each person's unique situation. I utilize a variety of different treatment approaches, depending on the problems presented, ranging from cognitive-behavioral, insight, family systems, to supportive reality therapy.

I am a licensed therapist and hold specialty certifications in Grief/Thanantology (Association of Death Education and Counseling), Clinical Certified Trauma Professional (IATP) & EMDR Level II certification. I have worked with many clients following traumatic loss or those experiencing anxiety, depression, past or current abusive situations, post abortion stress syndrome (PASS), parenting special needs children, or chronic or life shortening illnesses. I also offer a monthly support group for those seeking healing after the suicide of a significant person in their life (see information in "groups" below)

I am currently unable to take on any new patients as I am beyond capacity. I have received many calls and am honored to be chosen by people so bravely reaching out in their vulnerability to improve their mental health. It is not lost on me. Life should be an adventure!! Life coaching is an action oriented form of mental health treatment. I specialize in helping my clients identify problem areas in their lives and then designing and implementing an action plan to solve those problems. Life coaching stresses personal responsibility on the part of the client. I am a empathetic and compassionate listener. I can help persons involved in marital, relationship or family issues, PTSD or re-adjustment or deplyment or separation problems. I can help persons with career or financial problems as well. My ideal client wants to make a positive change in their life.

My goal is to help people identify problem areas and the personal strengths that are available to begin to address those problems. I also focus on helping people improve communication and relationship skills as a part of problem-solving. I treat individuals and couples dealing with depression, anxiety, grief/loss issues, substance abuse, communication and relationship problems, women's issues, adjustment problems, parenting, spiritual issues. At one point or another, we all feel worn down, disconnected, or just "stuck." Maybe it's a stressful situation or an ongoing problem that won't seem to resolve, or perhaps it's hard to identify a reason at all. In these moments, my goal is to join others where they are and work together toward peace and positive change. I hope to provide a place where you can re-examine how you've come to see yourself and others, learn skills for identifying and managing challenges you're facing, and open up to re-engage in the connections most important to you.
