Life is not about how many times you fall but how many times you get back up. The difficulties we face in life are different based on each individual perspective. Maintaining a smile while facing adversities can become overwhelming and tiring. Maybe you feel unseen, need help creating healthy boundaries, challenges with anxiety or depression, or making new life transitions. I am here to help clients learn effective coping skills for their issues and set goals to overcome obstacles in their life. My life experiences as an African American, and combat veteran will help to address any barriers that are interrupting your daily life.

As a black therapist, I can offer a lived experience perspective to help you work through the extra things you're dealing with that might be impacted by your own identity.
I love to help aspiring people find new meaning of life by sorting through complicated thoughts and feelings instead of avoiding them like an annoying telemarketer. My clients struggle just like you do. Despite being successful, intelligent, and as sweet as a Georgia peach, life is hard. When they first come in, they feel overwhelmed with every aspect of their life. What once seemed like a small hurdle has turned into an Olympic sport to overcome. They can hardly remember feeling motivated and feel like joy has vanished.

Without question my heart, passion, and skill set is working with men and young males ages 18 and up. Specifically, African American males with disabilities and behavioral challenges at home, work, and in community settings. My background and education provides an unique perspective into the challenges young males and men face. In addition, my strong belief in the family unit, as modeled by my personal lifestyle, provides me with an equal passion to see couples married and non-married figure out how to transition into lifestyles that best suite their individual and collective mental, emotional, and spiritual needs.

Imagine experiencing so many struggles, wounds, failures and traumatic experiences that the only peace you know is with drugs, alcohol, sex and toxic people-Imagine Becoming someone un recognizable to yourself, your family, your partner and your children and no matter how hard you try to fight it you keep going back to the substances, people/things that causes you to be the worst version of self, all the while slowly dying in the inside-This is what addiction looks like. Imagine being violated and abused and victimized by people, places, and situations who were supposed to love, protect and strengthen you, This is called Trauma!

I believe that all of the fulfillment that you seek to find externally, can be found within you. A lot of times, people spend their lives seeking ways to find joy and happiness in other things. This often leads to missing out on the beauty that is unfolding within their present day. It is easy for people to become consumed by their everyday lives and even easier to miss out on the simple things that bring happiness.

Seeking therapy can feel a little daunting, or maybe even embarrassing, but you're making the right choice. Have you been struggling with grief or loss? Do you find it hard to stay happy even though you have achieved a lot? Have you discovered an unresolved trauma that needs healing? Are you experiencing anxiety in unmanageable ways? Or do you just want help letting go of things that are keeping you "stuck?" I think I can help with that.

I believe we need to feel it to heal it! What exactly does that mean? We all have an individual journey to navigate and the best way to attain balance is learning how to trust someone with life “lived” experiences, empathy, failures and successes. We deserve the opportunity of experiencing at least one genuine relationship with a trusted professional that will keep it real. Once we believe we are seen & heard, our self-worth shows up in unimaginable ways. I am prepared to support you along this process if you commit to showing up for you. As long as you try, change is doable and new habits will foster lasting, healthy relationships.

Providing therapy, being a listener and helping others in essence found me. I did not initially plan to become a therapist but I am so happy and proud I did. I receive joy from being able to find the right words and work through the issue with my client. Therapy is a very important tool, whether it is intensive treatment or being a supportive ear.

Are you wondering if therapy is the right choice for you or a loved one? It can be hard to make that step of trust, especially when you are faced with challenges in your life. I believe in a person’s total wellness. I want to be apart of helping others make connections between the wellness of the mind, body, and spirit.

Black and African American Therapists

As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?

African American clients may seek out African American therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.

Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?

Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with African American clients?

Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with African American individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of African American clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognizing that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?

The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
