I pull techniques from CBT to help build coping strategies and DBT to enhance mindfulness and emotion regulation.
Does your child struggle to communicate feelings, misunderstand social cues, or manage intense emotions? Is your child impulsive, has trouble completing tasks, or suffers from sensory overload? These challenges can leave them feeling isolated, dampen their self-esteem, and strain their family and peer systems. If you or your child are looking for a compassionate and skilled therapist to navigate the journey of being or feeling different, I am here to help. I specialize in working with individuals who are navigating the unique challenges associated with developmental differences, such as ADHD and Autism.

Scott Leenan’s approach to psychotherapy is rooted in a variety of therapeutic modalities, including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), positive psychology, narrative therapy and existentialism. For Scott, becoming human is a project; our task is not so much to discover who we are, but rather to ‘create’ ourselves. During therapy sessions, he works with clients to identify and examine their personal values and priorities, beliefs, goals, and perceptions of reality. He also works with clients on stress management, personal growth and development, finding purpose and cultivating balance.

As a client-centered therapist, I believe in the human capacity to "self-actualize." In psychology, self-actualization is achieved when you're able to reach your full potential. I have learned that we are more alike than different in this work. Most people want to feel seen, heard, loved, valued, protected, and connected. Where one is missing, there is usually an amplification in anxiety. I am in the empathy business. I use connection and evidence-based treatments, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), to help clients clarify their "why" and navigate a path to deeper fulfillment—professionally and personally.

Relationships are hard, and connection is possible. Sometimes how we cope with pain and stress become the source of more pain and stress. We repeat patterns in relationships, seek escape in negative behaviors, or generally feel stuck. Often these behaviors are responses to past trauma or to a narrative we tell ourselves. Identifying these patterns and knowing where to start is difficult and rewarding work. Engaging in therapy will help you address concerns and trauma, reduce worry and anxiety, decrease depression and sadness and cultivate a healthy relationship with yourself and your environment.

I believe that we are all trying our best and that we are the experts on ourselves and our families. However sometimes life brings us more than we know how to handle, and we may see symptoms of anxiety, PTSD, and unhealthy or disruptive behavior in ourselves, our relationships, and our children. This can leave us feeling frustrated, hopeless, and isolated as individuals, couples, and parents. Thankfully, therapy can help us and our children move beyond our pain, fear, and destructive behavior, and toward a greater sense of peace, happiness, and belonging.

I understand how challenging it is to seek help and the courage it takes to change. We carry with us the unconscious lessons and ways of being that we learned in our earliest relationships. Even without a pandemic, life can present with struggle, hardship, or overwhelming challenges. We all have many parts, some react, some retreat, some feel stuck, and some feel resigned to life's circumstances. All of our parts are well-intended, but sometimes they cast a shadow, and all we see is one part of ourselves. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, generalized stress, hopelessness, or relationship issues, obstacles don't have to define you. We will help you build upon strengths, gain new perspective, redefine stories that no longer fit, and form a stronger, healthier connection with self and others.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
