Tweens and teens are undergoing a wondrous and uncertain time of discovery and growth. Parent/child conflicts become common and risky behaviors more prevalent. Navigating this territory may be a time of great uncertainty and tension. For 20 years I have been helping children and families work through issues such as depression and anxiety, friendship or school problems, communication and social troubles, on-line behavior and family conflict, sexuality and gender questions, and autism and learning differences. Call and we can discuss your particular concerns and decide if I would be a good fit for you and/or your child.

Along with training in marriage and family therapy, I am a clinical art therapist, and certified in EMDR.
I have always believed that we are the masters of our destiny, and couldn't do the work I do without trusting that everyone is capable of change. One of the most exciting aspects of therapy is embracing that hope for yourself, your child, or family. Throughout my 30 years of experience, I have developed therapeutic approaches to empower clients and help them manage and overcome feelings of depression and anxiety, conflicted relationships, unhealthy behaviors and other stressors. As a family therapist, I work closely with families when treating children and adolescents, and offer guidance on parenting issues.

Are you feeling squeezed in the caregiver sandwich? Feeling stuck between the responsibilities of work and family can be even more overwhelming when all of your tasks seem focused on caregiving. Does everyone want something, and they want it from you - right now? Of course you feel anxious and stressed. You might care for children, parents, your partner, or patients, and maybe a combination of those. That's the caregiver sandwich for sure, and it often feels pressured, lonely, and downright frustrating. Maybe you've started to feel like you're not even "you" anymore - just someone who exists to give everything they have to others.

Anxiety, depression, anger, and low self-esteem are issues that can be overwhelming. I help clients to identify the factors that contribute to these issues, and then assist in formulating a plan to reduce the symptoms and resolve the problems. I provide a warm, nonjudgmental environment to address these concerns. Additionally, I am experienced in working with individuals and couples struggling with relationships and/or parenting. Parenting can be wonderful, but also extremely challenging. Relationships can falter. These situations can bring up unexpected thoughts and feelings that may be difficult to share with friends and family.

As a Marriage & Family Therapist who specializes in infidelity and trust issues, I understand the healing process, and what has to happen to make the marriage viable again.
You never expected your marriage would turn out this way. Trust issues, the trauma of betrayal… It’s almost as if you’re married to someone different. No one is sleeping, one of you is under a microscope while the other is a private detective. At the same time, fights have become unproductive; filled with accusations and denials. You’ve invested years into this relationship, and now the thought that this could be the end feels terrifying. Should you stay or call it quits? Neither option looks attractive. The pain is unbearable and you just want it to stop. The infidelity in your marriage has created a true emergency.

While everyone is unique in their struggles, I believe that most suffering can be alleviated by addressing root causes such as early childhood traumas, nervous system dysfunction, and family of origin wounding.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
