I'm so glad that you are here. You may be here to look into therapy for yourself, or for someone that you love. Maybe this is your first time looking for a therapist, or perhaps you've spoken to many therapists in the past. Wherever you're coming from today - just know that therapy is a wonderful gift you can give to yourself at any time in your life. You can't be "too bad" or "too good" to enter therapy. In fact, I am going to invite you to let go of the idea of "good/bad," "right/wrong, "fair/unfair" in our work together.

Despite your best intentions and efforts, do you feel stuck in your personal life, intimate relationships, family relationships or workplace? You may be faced with challenges that are deeply rooted in your early life experiences, your primary attachments, in how you view the world, or due to misunderstanding between you and significant others. Challenges can arise during stressful life transitions, such as divorce or death of loved ones. But they can also arise from positive life experiences, such as marriage or the birth of a child. Left untreated, these challenges can grow into chronic problems that can corrode your sense of self and your relationships.

Because you will be putting a good deal of time, money, and energy into therapy, you should choose a therapist carefully. I believe you should feel comfortable with the therapist you choose, and hopeful about the therapy process. When you feel this way, therapy is more likely to be helpful to you. I have more than 20 years helping people work through grief and loss, life transitions, relationship struggles, career indecision, anxiety and depression. In addition, I have considerable experience helping individuals struggling with issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity.

TESTIMONIAL. Prior to meeting Pamela Goffman I was desperately seeking a psychotherapist who could help me with my deep depression and feelings of emptiness and loneliness. For a period of five years I counseled with four different therapists to seek peace in my life. My life was a mess during my five year search, I had hit rock bottom. It had to be divine intervention that lead me to Pamela Goffman. While the four previous therapists talked me through my immediate issue(s), Pamela quickly identified the core of my pain and we began our journey of healing together.

Before consulting a professional, most people have already addressed their difficulties as well as they can – but they can only deal with what they know. What they typically need help with is the parts of their struggles they are not aware of. The treatments that help most to bring hidden matters to light, and under conscious control, are based on psychoanalytic principles. As a psychoanalyst and psychiatrist, I try to understand people from multiple points of view. I work with my patients to help them get as clear and comprehensive a picture as possible.

At times, life can be painful, heartbreaking, and completely devastating. As we go through life, we are constantly exposed to reality gaps—the gaps between the reality we have and the reality we want. The larger the gap, often, the more unsettling the pain. I meet people where they are and help them work to meet their personal goals and values. I’m skilled at creating an environment in which individuals feel heard, understood, and affirmed, but also challenged. I have extensive experience working with adults and adolescents experiencing chronic depression, anxiety, attachment issues, and interpersonal relationship conflict.

Adoption Therapists
Does my adopted child need therapy?
Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.
When should adoptive parents seek therapy?
Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.
Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?
Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.
What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?
A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
