I became a mental health counselor after many years working in student services in a university setting. I find (as the research continues to show) that the most important element of effective counseling is the connection between client and counselor—we will work collaboratively. I draw on many approaches including but not limited to client-centered, mindfulness, existential therapy, attachment theory, Buddhist psychology, internal parts work, and EMDR.

Many of us look 'fine' on the outside, but inside it's more complicated than that. You may have feelings of uncertainty or insecurity, worry about some aspects of the future, or be dealing with fallout from the past. You may be struggling with challenging symptoms such as anxiousness, a sense of life dissatisfaction, or feeling 'low' much of the time. All of this is part of being a human in a complex time, and often this can be addressed by counseling. Talking and processing with another person can provide so much relief. I help by creating a safe space where you can feel free to, at your own pace, explore current challenges.

I provide a space for each client that is inclusive and respectful for the individual I am working with to cocreate a therapeutic relationship that supports what you are needing through a connection to your body, brain, heart, and the world that surrounds you. Together we gently explore and understand the pre-existing patterns, mental stories, and limiting thoughts and behaviors that are holding you back while releasing this sense of rushing and overwhelm that so many are living with, to fully live in the present moment and truly LIVE your life to the fullest.

In our work together, I will not ask you to complete worksheets, talk about breathing, or the importance of mindfulness. In fact, we are unlikely to talk about many things you can easily find through a Google search. Instead, I will ask questions to learn about you, explore various parts of yourself and your history, critical life experiences, and the relationship between them. The stress that we are feeling and the barriers we face are often rooted to those very relationships we will explore. I am able to work with those in New York, Illinois, and Indiana. I accept Aetna, Cigna, and BCBS of Mass. More coming soon.

In psychotherapy, we work together to understand the meaning of your symptoms and the sources of your pain. The therapeutic process is in large part a careful encounter with the past in the hope of getting beyond what happened to you and discovering who you are apart from your history. It also includes the exploration of your beliefs, emotions, protective strategies, recurring patterns, and relationship dynamics. From a stance of compassion and curiosity, we put words to your experience and what has been unsayable before.

I have an unconditional commitment to each of my clients to be open and honest, to be focused on their life-enhancing goals, and to work in a proactive manner to help them achieve these goals in the briefest possible time. No single approach works for everyone. Some issues may be addressed with a short-term, solution-focused approach. More complex issues may need a combination of approaches over a longer time.

I accept clients age 60 and over, younger if they are caring for an elder. Aging can bring the release from the worries and stress of youth, bring joy and possibilities with more free time. It can also bring anxiety about the future, depression, loss and grief, a disturbing medical diagnosis. I have almost thirty years of experience helping adults and their caregivers navigate emotional changes, trauma, challenges associated with dementia, changes in relationships, health status, grief and loss. It is my honor to walk with you at this time, and to help you find peace.

Update: Therapist Intern Kaitlynn Shultz has joined my practice and is available. Our minds and bodies are powerful forces, which are wholly connected. Environmental factors, as well as belief and value systems are deeply rooted in how we present ourselves physically and emotionally. Painful life events can fracture the mind/body connection for the sake of survival. Adults may experience anxious and depressive thoughts. Relationships may see increased tension and/or codependent traits. Healing from therapeutic intervention is recognizing unhelpful “parts” and bringing love, appreciation and competency to your internal world.

*I am not able to accept new clients at this time for individual treatment. However, I am accepting people for group therapy. * I enjoy building relationships that facilitate the healing process - moving from just coping everyday to overcoming barriers in relationships, work, school and overall well-being through connection. I have experience working with adults and adolescents with persistent anxiety, depression and difficulty in attachment, often this is due to trauma. Additionally, I enjoy working with adolescents and their families to create relationships that work for all family members.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
