I work with folks experiencing depression, anxiety, or trauma related to society, family, relationships, life transitions, etc. Many of my clients have survived an adverse childhood and are now learning to thrive in the present day. After our work together, the majority of my clients experience more joy, have improved the quality of their relationships, and feel more empowered to move through difficult life challenges. Were your parents or caregivers unavailable or withholding? Is it hard for you to be present during life's successes because of past traumatic experiences? Is it hard to make or maintain healthy relationships?

I specialize in depression, anxiety, loss and grief, trauma/PTSD, and issues related to adolescents and young adulthood.
Life can be tough. We all face times when we are overwhelmed by major life changes or decisions, or experience sadness or depression for long periods of time that can make engaging in work and social activities difficult. Past traumas can also affect us in ways we don't expect, requiring a little help to process. My practice uses a strengths based approach to work through challenges together. I believe that we are all the experts of our own experiences, and I use this philosophy to help my clients achieve their goals.

Hello, my name is Dr. Keoshia Worthy and thank you for visiting my profile. The question that I am frequently asked is, “How do I know if I need therapy?” I like to approach that question by considering the common misconceptions and benefits of therapy. Therapy is not just for people with mental illnesses, someone grieving a loss, or someone who experienced a trauma. Therapy is for anyone, even the well-adjusted person. I believe the benefits from therapy are vast and vary from person to person. For example, therapy can reduce stress, improve relationships, and help with decision-making.

Welcome to my practice. If we worked together, you could bring me your doubts, pains and fears. We could look into your problem behaviors and beliefs to see more clearly what drives them and what other choices you might have. We would get to know your strengths and use them. We would investigate how painful past experiences including trauma might still be affecting your reactions and choices, and try to reduce their impact. As a therapist, I am an active listener, often asking clarifying questions and inviting reflection. This exchange builds mindfulness, which I believe is essential to health.

I really enjoy working with people who want to be helped with painful feelings and experiences that have interfered with their sense of well being. All of us are limited by upsettingly negative emotions that make it harder to accomplish things that would make our lives richer, more comfortable and secure. I base my work on the principles of Mindfulnes Based Cognitive Behavior Therapy. This approach has been shown to be very successful helping anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, phobias and many other individual and relationship issues. Like most experienced therapists, I also integrate ideas from other approaches whenever appropriate.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
