Are you and your spouse stuck in repetitive arguments, feeling misunderstood, or emotionally distant? Does loneliness creep in even when you're together? When dealing with your own unresolved crap, it's not uncommon to feel burnt out from your relationship and overwhelmed by resentment, trauma, or anxiety. If you're stressed and feeling stuck in your life or in your marriage depression and sadness can set in. These feelings can block your path to peaceful relationships with yourself or others leaving you questioning the future. Transforming a relationship often begins with transforming oneself.

My areas of focus include but are not limited to: anxiety, depression, family conflict, marital and premarital issues, and stress management.
Life is unpredictable. You take one step forward and it pushes you two steps backwards. You jump up and gravity pulls you down. But rather than stepping in opposition of the forces of life, why not step in sync with it? Learn to dance and move to the rhythm of life. My clients learn to become mentally flexible so that they can maintain their peace as they dip, swing and dance to whatever beat life throws their way.

Reaching out for help can be quite a bit anxiety-inducing, as we generally do not know what to expect. It is understandable! I do not take for granted that my clients come to me, a stranger, and share personal details of their lives. I want it to feel like a collaborative process, and the trust we built together is important. When working with me, you can expect me to trust that you know yourself best, so I want to hear from you where you are, and where you want to be. As we work together, I can help you heal from past traumas, and your relationship with yourself will change which will create change in the relationships around you.

I incorporate both cognitive and emotion focused approaches in my work and help you to examine patterns, behaviors, and processes that may no longer be useful. I also specialize in couples therapy and use a process oriented approach that is focused on understanding communication patterns, increasing emotional harmony, and overall relational satisfaction.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
