I have particular expertise in relational issues, sexuality/gender issues, anxiety, depression, fertility and parenting challenges, sexual trauma, maximizing creativity, and family trauma.
Embarking upon the journey of psychotherapy is no easy task, but ultimately can prove to be one of life's most important and transformative decisions. I start wherever you are, providing an empathic and accepting space for us to collaboratively begin to understand and shift areas of difficulty, conflict, confusion, or stuckness in order to create a more satisfying and fulfilling life in the areas that are most important to you.

Trauma, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, OCD, relationship problems, spirituality...dedicated to a deep symbolically oriented approach, I integrate a grounded training in psychoanalysis with expressive and spiritual work. I like the heart as well as the mind to be present in our work together. We may be a good match if you wish a flexible, deep, compassionate process that combines depth analysis along with practicality, and awareness of body-based states. Executive Director Emerita of the Institute for Expressive Analysis, with over 30 years experience as a therapist, I am on the faculty of 3 universities plus the Institute.

I've worked with trauma and injustice for many years, and I recognize the courage it takes to trust another person with the most vulnerable parts of yourself. My primary modalities are EMDR and Internal Family Systems (IFS). In my office, I strive to provide a therapeutic space where all parts feel welcome, where you can experience something radically different and practice new and courageous ways of relating to yourself and to others. I've successfully helped teenagers, adults and couples experience healing from trauma and unresolved events, peace from anxiety and acceptance in times of grief.

Engaging in personal exploration through therapy, though occasionally fraught with pain and difficulty, yields profound insights into our deepest fears and desires. By bringing our feelings, thoughts, and motivations into conscious awareness, we can begin to understand the self-defeating patterns that get in the way of our fulfillment in love, relationships, and work. As a psychologist, I primarily work with adults, including young adults navigating their identities and professionals balancing their work and personal lives. In addition, I specialize in treating individuals struggling with trauma and personality disorders.

I work with a wide range of psychological concerns related to anxiety, depression, trauma, sex/sexuality, body image, chronic illness, substance use, and complex relational or family dynamics.
I received my B.A. from Yale, my doctorate in clinical psychology from Rutgers, and intensive full-time clinical training at Bellevue Hospital. My therapeutic style prioritizes authenticity, warmth, and active engagement, and I value the patterns that recur in our ways of being to shape our identity, behavior, and relationships. I work primarily from a psychodynamic perspective with roots in attachment theory, and I draw from cognitive-behavioral, trauma-informed, and mind-body modalities to complement an insight-driven approach with here-and-now strategies for cultivating resilience and relief.

The burdens of life may become too heavy for us to carry alone or the pain too great to sustain in silence. Painful relationships, negative self-judgments, and unresolved past experiences can impair our ability to bounce back from difficulties. I will strive to co-create with you a therapeutic relationship based on trust, hope and respect, and in which you are in charge at every step of the process. I will help you uncover your inner strengths and capacities for growth and healing. Together we will discover the nature and the source of the obstacles you face.

I am a psychotherapist specializing in individual treatment for people who have experienced physical, sexual and/or emotional abuse. These traumatic experiences make it difficult to feel safe in the world and create barriers to achieving rewarding intimate relationships and professional success. In my work with clients, I have two goals: to create a supportive space where the trauma and its impact can be explored; and to help each person develop better self-nurturing and coping skills so that they can overcome the fears, destructive behaviors and negative internal messages that prevent them from achieving their full potential.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
