My passion is helping people adjust to significant transitions in their lives. Often when we experience changes in our lives, we lose our sense of balance and identity. These changes may be caused by the death of a loved one, shifts in family roles, adjustment to an illness, or new demands at school or work. In our work, you will gain a deeper understanding of how these transitions are impacting your mood, quality of life, and overall happiness. I work with clients to set and achieve realistic goals, while using one's values and strengths to help achieve these goals.

"I Just Can't Seem to Get Over My Problem..." Does that statement resonate with you? Even successful people can still have unresolved struggles. I help people move beyond their stumbling blocks. Depression, anxiety, relationship problems, disturbing life experiences such as abuse, accidents, traumas, sudden illness/death can all prevent you from happiness. When symptoms persist, you can feel discouraged or defeated. You are not alone! Many clients feel this way when they first see me. Often, they've struggled for quite some time and have tried everything, only to experience partial relief. Hope is always available.

I also consider it a privilege to deal with other life problems, such as illness, aging, dying, and grief.
I am warm, open, and informal. People feel safe and comfortable enough to trust me with their secrets, fears, and intimacies. I am aware that by the time you call a therapist, you want some relief! So, I work from the "Top Down" -- giving stress-relief, relaxation, new perspectives, and ways to help you to feel better quickly --as well as from the "Bottom Up", so you understand why you are the way you are, and how you might change what you want to...

I have been working with people faced with significant loss for the past thirty years. People often ask me if this work is depressing - I always say that the stories I hear are not only stories of loss - they are love stories. We grieve becaue we love. Sometimes that love is complicated, and so the grief is complicated. Sometimes the loss changes us in ways that we feel are unbearable and unsustainable. My work is about helping you move from a state of deep pain and preoccupation with loss to a place where you can reengage with life.

I am acutely sensitive to all ranges of feeling, and to the critical need for all those who have difficulty sustaining work and love to surrender to facing the pain of grief from past losses and disappointments.
I have found that the most efficient avenue to life progress can be the connection between the psychotherapist and the client. Such connection promotes an evolving internal connection with one's most true passions, and offers the company of another in facing fears. I would help you to deal with conflicts that block your motivation and passion and help you open to new ways of engaging with your inner resources, and with the significant people in your life. In order to this I address any blocks & resistances that interfere with deep and authentic feeling contact.

I can guide you through all of life’s challenges, from the daily tasks of adulting to the deep aches of grief.
Every one of us is losing something precious to us. Lost opportunities, lost possibilities, feelings we can never get back again. That's part of what it means to be alive. (Murakami). Loss is a part of life - of loved ones, hopes and dreams, relationships, a sense of safety. If you’ve lost your sense of self, I can help you return to yourself. If you’ve lost your professional mojo, I can guide you to rediscover it. I provide a holding space for you so you can move forward with strength and optimism, and eventually find meaning, growth and a renewed sense of purpose. Remember - there is no way out but through.

I specialize in working with adults who are feeling overwhelmed because they are living/caring for someone with an illness, going through grief or loss or navigating other big life changes to provide support and a space where they will receive compassion and have the room to laugh, cry, be angry and explore ALL their emotions as they adjust to a new normal.
Do you feel that you have been trying to manage everything on your own, be everything to everyone and suddenly you feel as if you can't do it alone anymore? My goal is to provide you with a safe space where you can be comfortable sharing and exploring your thoughts and feelings. I hope that together we can navigate the challenges, while also building awareness and gaining the tools you need to make positive changes in your life. I use humor, warmth and compassion in my sessions, and want you to feel as if we are working together to manage the stressors that have brought you here today.

I work with a wide range of age groups; young adults who are defining themselves, increasing autonomy, strengthening identities, often communicating through behavior; couples trying to improve communication styles or learning how to negotiate transitional periods in their relationships; older adults navigating life's challenges with resulting changes in roles. Clients of all ages may be dealing with relationship issues, poor confidence or self-esteem, loss, depression, anxiety and addictive problems, seeking to understand the sources of their discomfort rather than continue trying to avoid or outrun their problems.

There are many reasons why we seek therapy; and they differ in terms of how problems and circumstances influence our lives. I work with adults, teens, and couples seeking relief from anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, relationship issues, poor self-assertion skills, identity issues, and life stressors (such as death of a loved one, divorce, job loss, career change). I also work with college students in NYC living away from family and support; young adults launching into adulthood in NYC; and helping couples find solutions to problems in an otherwise satisfying relationships. Out-of-network reimbursement options are available.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
