Sometimes beginning therapy can feel as though you are entering the unknown. I aspire to create an environment that feels safe, warm, non-judgmental and allows for you to start where you truly are. I use a person-centered approach that promotes insight, self-awareness and helps you learn more about how you see yourself, the world around you, and your relationships. With this insight comes motivation, identification and utilization of strengths, and meaningful, lasting change. I have over 12 years of post-masters experience with diverse populations and am genuinely invested in working with you to realize your goals.

Life can be filled with challenging moments, situations and relationships. Such encounters can cause depression, anxiety and isolation. Life events may lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms that can evolve into self-destructive behaviors or relationships. I believe that healing and insight are stimulated by an interpersonal connection provided through a therapeutic alliance between the client and the therapist. I am trained in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, motivational interviewing, and multiple behavioral therapies. I have years of experience as a therapist working in a renowned outpatient substance abuse and mental health facility.

When we begin working together the client will set the pace and tone for treatment. This means we will work on identifying where you would like to take your treatment and how to begin. You may have realized you would like to help ease symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and even interpersonal conflicts.

People turning to therapy are often interested in understanding AND results. Change. Movement. That may look like navigating a life event more smoothly or simply feeling better - less anxious, more productive, peaceful. I help people of all ages develop strategies to handle transitions, overcome obstacles and set and reach goals. I do this by using the concrete tools I’ve developed in my work with hundreds of clients over the years – individuals, couples and families ready to address the challenges we all face at some point in our lives. Together, we cultivate a sense of agency and well-being.

Are you in the midst of a life transition? Do you have trouble putting words to your feelings or feel like it’s hard to take up space? Are you navigating romantic relationships and having difficulty setting boundaries? I work with people who are eager to learn more about themselves but struggle to voice their needs and have learned to keep themselves connected by over-giving. Together, we work towards recognizing internalized messages from families and culture at large in order to help you locate your authentic voice and quiet the noise from outside.

Finding a therapist that is a good fit for you can feel challenging. It is important for you to feel safe, comfortable and understood. I believe therapy should be a place where you feel seen and heard in a genuine way. Within this relationship you can begin to see patterns in your life where perhaps you feel stuck. It is my belief that by understanding where anxiety, depression and grief may be stemming from in your life, you can make shifts toward more successful relationships and a life with more fulfillment.

I have worked with clients with issues such as marital problems, but they improved self-esteem, advocacy, and assertiveness in therapy, which reduced conflict with their spouse. My ideal client is someone motivated to change at the onset of therapy, who is committed to attending regular therapy sessions, identifies their goals, and focuses on a collaborative process to achieve their goals.

The successful outcome of the work done in therapy is so very much a result of the unique relationship between patient and therapist. To that end my practice is one in which I am active, supportive and non-judgemental.Emotional injuries from the past live in the present, effecting how we relate and react to people and events throughout life. Psychotherapy has the potential to heal past wounds and impart the insights that can result in a healthier, more emotionally prosperous present. Depression, anxiety and relationship problems need not define us.

As a therapist with over 25 years of experience, I have been privileged to be part of positive change for individuals, families, and couples with a wide range of issues.I strive to form a collaborative, supportive, and professional relationship with clients. I prefer a "down to earth" approach where clients feel comfortable to speak freely without judgement. I understand how difficult it is to discuss issues related to anxiety, OCD, panic attacks, depression, self esteem, trauma, relationship issues, and situational stress. I appreciate the strength that is needed to talk about these issues and have great respect for all clients.

We come to therapy when we feel like our old ways of being in the world are no longer serving us. We may feel trapped by repetitive cycles, overwhelmed by challenges in our personal or professional lives, or curious about what our lives could be like if we were to let the deepest parts of ourselves find expression in our day-to-day. Very often, we are struggling to find the language to communicate who we really are, what we really need, and why we do the things we do. In some cases, we are trying to make sense of experiences that exist beyond the reach of language itself.

Psychoanalytic therapy is often maligned in popular media but it remains for me one of the few treatments that seeks to address the innermost, often hidden, parts of ourselves. Psychological symptoms are not only a source of suffering, they are also a message that speaks to desires, conflicts, and pain, wrought by a personal history that can sometimes only come alive when spoken to a professional listening other. The flip-side of anxiety is always a passionate dream that has not been encountered as such. I see my work as bringing my clients closer to that possibility. The intimacy of speaking and listening is rare and a gift.

I believe that taking the first step towards therapy is an act of courage. Sometimes it's easy to 'know' on some level that something about your life isn't working, but breaking out of an unhealthy pattern is the hard part. I aim to create a warm and nonjudgmental space to allow you to examine what is causing you to feel stuck, and challenge you to show up differently. Sessions can help you feel less anxious, and more confident and clear, as you learn how to better manage day to day challenges and feel more connected within your relationships, to self and others.

How can I find a therapist in 10014?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
