People who are motivated to secure change in their lives are my ideal clients. We all get stuck but if we stay focused on the problem we will stay stuck. My goal is to move from problem to solution. Whether struggling with depression, anxiety, family issues or just trying to be our best selves in this extremely challenging environment we can all use support and help. Sometimes just verbalizing the issues to a non-judgmental professional allows the client to recognize that they are stuck and motivates them to make changes with the support and guidance that I as a therapist can provide.

The best psychotherapy builds upon a solid relationship between a client and therapist, allowing the client to take risks in examining themselves, acknowledge their strengths and weaknesses, process painful memories and use their strengths to create change. In my therapeutic work I focus on nurturing that relationship to facilitate my client's change and self-acceptance. I am well trained in psychoanalysis, psychoanalytic therapy and family/couples therapy as well as cognitive-behavioral and short term therapy techniques and use what my clients and I believe will best facilitate their goals in treatment.

I appreciate the uniqueness of every individual and situation and can adapt my approach to what will be most effective in treating the underlying issue causing distress. I am passionate and enthusiastic about helping clients to move out of what isn't working for them and empower them to reach their goals. I love watching clients learn skills to help them move out of depression and anxiety to higher levels of functioning. I especially enjoy working with couples in distress and help them get to a place where their relationship is a source of comfort rather than stress.

Searching for a safe place where you can be unapologetically yourself? Where you can feel heard, validated and understood? I am here to listen empathically, lead you to your innermost thoughts and feelings, and help support you in living your truth and creating a life worth living. BUT- prepare to be challenged and answer tough questions; I will be there to provide comfort and help you cope with whatever answers may come. Nothing is off-limits- I’m here for it all. It takes a lot to ruffle my feathers, so don’t hold back.

There are times in our lives where our struggles become especially difficult and we decide to seek out a therapist to walk a part of the journey with us. Therapy involves a very special kind of listening within the safety of a unique relationship. This special kind of listening is what is essential to my work. The development and transformation of each relationship between me and my client(s) is the creative, healing aspects of our work together.

I help clients through the transitions that come from big changes in their lives, whether it be marriage, graduating and transitioning to adulthood, the death of a loved one, changing careers, or starting families. These transitions or changes can trigger feelings of anxiety, depression, grief, and ambivalence that we work through together by exploring all of the reactions they are having, without judgement. I work hard to build a trusting relationship with my clients by being open, reliable, and curious about their unique experience.

We face so many important life challenges- uncertainty, parenting struggles, loss, life transitions or falling "out of sync with” a partner or spouse, to name a few. I provide a safe, warm, and non-judgmental environment for individuals and couples to feel heard and understood, and to work towards desired changes. We'll collaborate to help you reduce your levels of stress, anxiety and/or depression, identifying and activating previously unrecognized strengths. I will challenge your assumptions about your limitations, as well as other negative thoughts, so you can achieve a higher level of functioning and greater emotional freedom.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
