Sometimes the world we are seemingly familiar with begins to slowly slip from within our grip. We find ourselves thrown into the unknown, unable to see a clear path forward. The fear, isolation, and sense of meaninglessness that may result from these kinds of experiences can be crippling, but don't give up. Within suffering, strength can be found.

Hello, I’m Art Erskine and I have been counseling individuals, families and groups since 1998. I graduated from Assumption College in Worcester, MA with my Master’s in Counseling Psychology. The bulk of my early training centered around Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Structural Family Therapy. Motivational interviewing, aggression replacement training, person centered therapy, and coaching have been skills I have built over the years.

I believe that I am not much different from many of the clinicians working for GENNEW, providing outpatient therapy services. I like to work with clients from all different backgrounds. I believe that I work well with both anxiety and depression, but especially dealing with those who want to understand themselves better. The clients that will have the greatest benefit in working with me have an internal desire for change and are ready to do the work. This doesn't mean that I don't have patience, but I have found that those who come geared for change seem to attain it in less time.

I offer person-centered individual sessions, my background, experience, and faith allow me a certain level of cultural awareness, which is imperative for effective therapy. My main goal is to help individuals/families work through whatever the current crisis may be, but also teach or enhance skills to help maintain stability.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist at PVD Psychological Associates and am a bicultural and bilingual therapist (native fluency in Spanish). I specialize in the areas of complex traumas, identity development, depressive disorders, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, relationship issues, and working with LGBTQIA-identified individuals. I practice within a psychodynamic-interpersonal framework, though I often use strategies from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness, compassion based techniques, and narrative approaches.

"When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves". A person, child or adult able to reflect and build on themselves will be able to do great things when they can seek guidance and help. Experience with suffering is a strength I see in my clients that has given them tools for growth that many others may lack. Someone who is in need of guidance, challenging, and strength building will be able to get their needs met from our sessions. Self care is hard, it's work, but with help this work can become much more manageable.

Do you ever feel a tug-of-war inside, with different parts of you pulling in various directions? This inner dialogue can be confusing, but a completely natural part of being human. We all have different parts of ourselves, some carrying difficult emotions like shame or anger, while others step in to protect us from those feelings. Therapy is not about fixing something “wrong” with you. Often, our emotional reactions or behaviors are understandable responses to past experiences. What might have once been self-protective or even life-saving can become challenging when our circumstances change, yet the feelings or behaviors linger.

There are countless ways to feel peace, joy and purpose in each and every day; within ourselves and in connection to the people, places and things that surround us. As a holistic mental health practitioner with several years of experience across settings, I have developed a clear understanding of the important role of open-heartedness and persistence as guiding principles in my client-centered approach to growth and healing.
