There are clients, who's religious trauma or bombardment of specific roles assigned by family, has left them feeling lost. This lack of identity, increases comparing self to others more than appreciating one’s own talents. Negative self-talk impacts one’s ability to truly believe in themselves, so having the opportunity to process, the origination of false narratives is key. Learning self-compassion allows old behaviors to be sympathized with, instead of scolded so as to rewrite new narratives. As client advocate, I will use the therapeutic space to provide the patience needed, to unpack past hurt, and explore future possibilities.
As a therapist, I believe my curiosity to learn all that I can about the human condition, as well as my openness to being corrected, allows me to remain in a judgement free zone at all times. My aim is to always meet my clients exactly where they are. Challenging clients respectfully is a must, as I believe they truly are the creators of their own destiny.
I personally know what it’s like to have a family member stricken with mental illness, as much as I know what it is like to feel as though you don’t quite fit in anywhere. Experiences like these can leave one feeling hopeless and isolated. Everyone has a story, and therefore no matter the size of the t, in way or another trauma touches us all.
