As a board certified adult psychiatrist, I specialize in prescribing medication and providing psychotherapy for anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, trauma, sleep disturbances and other emotional conditions. I studied at Harvard, Brown and Cornell Universities, and I am certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Patients often come to me when they are struggling to find the right psychiatric medication to manage their symptoms. It can be difficult to find a medication that offers relief without burdensome side effects. Together, we can find a regimen that works for you.

I think it is important to understand symptoms in the context of patients's lives, and I work hard to address issues such as sleep, exercise, diet and relationships.
I am proud to say that I am a general psychiatrist with extensive experience in the treatment of psychiatric illness, including mood disorder, anxiety, ADHD, and cognitive disorders.

Dr. Laura Davidson is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in Rhode Island who has been practicing since 2011. She earned a Bachelor’s of Nursing at University of Arizona, a Master’s of Nursing with PMHNP at Arizona State University, and a Doctorate of Nursing Practice at Arizona State University. Behavioral health medications work best when combined with self-kindness, adequate sleep, and setting aside a little special time just for you. In Dr. Davidson’s experience, people seem to struggle the most with self-kindness. When we are struggling with low mood and anxiety, our inner critic becomes louder and meaner.

I specialize in serving clients who are navigating a range of challenges, from managing stress, anxiety, and depression to coping with life transitions, trauma, ADHD, and other disorders. Their needs are multifaceted; they require a safe space to express themselves openly without judgment and seek guidance in developing a regimen that may include medications, coping strategies, and effective management of their condition. Their journey may involve the need for medications alongside psychotherapy. I can assist them in managing this aspect of care with comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and ongoing treatment monitoring.

Sleep or Insomnia Psychiatrists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
