Psychoanalytic therapies work in depth to help people with their difficulties and life crises, even if the actual work has a short term focus on a life crisis.
I'm a psychoanalyst who works with adults, children, couples and families, and have a subspecialty in sexual difficulties. I have taught and written about issues across many areas of the life cycle, and am probably best known for my treatment and teaching about couple and family difficulties. Although I am a psychiatrist, I only prescribe for patients I treat with psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.

I have extensive training in psychoanalytic (psychodynamic) psychotherapy, which in my professional opinion is the most effective and lasting treatment for many psychiatric disorders and psychological difficulties.
Many people struggle with persistently low moods or high anxieties. Such problems can go on for decades and lead to less-than-ideal coping mechanisms. Often such troubles affect important relationships and life goals, which furthers the suffering of the individual. Along the way, people acquire diagnoses like depression, generalized anxiety, addictive disorders, personality disorders, trauma disorders, eating disorders, etc. They may also collect prescription medications that are supposed to help, yet provide inadequate relief. My aim is to provide a custom-built, integrative and cohesive treatment for individuals.

I received my Bachelors Degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where I majored in the Biological Basis of Behavior and competed on the Men's Varsity Swimming Team. After graduating and prior to medical school, I became a private high school science teacher. I completed my Psychiatry residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in NYC, where I was selected as Chief Resident. During that time, I also completed a Psychodynamic Fellowship at New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. I then completed a Clinical Research Fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health with a focus on Depression and Anxiety.

Certified in psychoanalysis for children and adults, I am internationally well-known for psychoanalysis/ psychoanalytic psychotherapy with couples and families, individual adults and children.
I offer psychoanalysis and psychotherapy and I do not prescribe medication. Together, we focus on understanding your symptoms and mastering your upsetting impulses, conflicts, and relationships. You will learn to modify the way that early relationships affect current relationships. You’ll make links between your thoughts, feelings, and experiences now and in the past, decode your dreams, recognize your ways of protecting yourself, and acknowledge how you have been held back so you can then move forward in career, friendship, and love.

I am able to draw on both the psychoanalytic tradition, as well as medication therapy, and to use them in an integrated fashion.
I use talk therapy and, when necessary, medications, to help people get to a place in which they can listen to their own voice, and use their own strengths, to cope with life's challenges, to establish a meaningful vision for their life, and to carry it out. I help people with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and career difficulties.

The ideal client will be any individual suffering from a mental disorder seeking help from a mental health expert. While my goal is to cater to the needs of everyone with mental health disorders, I understand that success can only be achieved if an individual is willing to seek the help of an expert. An ideal client will be seeking counseling on managing their symptoms and receiving the appropriate medication to return to their normal lifestyle. The goal of the ideal client will be to take charge of their health and achieve optimal mental wellness.

Psychoanalytic Psychiatrists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
