It keeps me updated in many cutting-edge professional areas which makes me a good candidate for assisting you.
I started my career as a child psychiatrist and a researcher 20 years ago. I was interested not only in biological basis of mental disorders, but in psychotherapy and the concept of change. Upon immigration to the US, I studied among influential psychiatrists and therapists in New York and Boston. Currently I work in inpatient and outpatient settings, supervise medical students, and conduct psychiatric research. As I have been for the past 20 years, I am still fascinated with the amazing, complex process of individual development.

As a provider, my goal is to facilitate your connection to your own strength, resilience, wisdom, and joy through holding space for the safe exploration of your inner world. I believe that medication is a valuable tool when used consciously and consensually, but is rarely the only support we need. My approach to care is sex-positive, identity-affirmative, and growth-centered, emerging from a position of non-judgement, gentleness, and curiosity. I have a particular commitment to trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people, as well as to those navigating the harms of racism, ableism, heterosexism, and fat-phobia.

Hello, my name is Panagiota Korenis and I am a board certified psychiatrist. My practice gives clients the opportunity to visit in unique ways. We do not need to conform to the norms of a traditional office. I offer flexible hours that include weekends, early mornings, and evenings. I do this because I hear clients when they tell me that they need to identify their “pockets of time” to work on their mental health. By offering alternative hours, I help clients balance the everyday challenges of life in a way that works for them.

The world can be a difficult place, and my calling is to help by getting to know you as a human being with a story. I specialize in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry — I treat a wide range of ages and difficulties. There are times when the careful use of medication may be helpful and even life-saving — and medication may not always address the needs of the whole person. I can also help you write and rewrite your story with an integration of compassion, common sense, and years of experience in a variety of evidence-based psychotherapies. I am licensed in NY, CA, NJ, and CT.

I offer combined medication management and psychotherapy. The Whole Circle approach is informed by a reverence for the power of narrative and the transpersonal. My holistic training in ketamine-assisted psychotherapy allows me to create a safe space that includes a spiritually-intentional set and setting for each journey I facilitate. My background in narrative therapy informs my view of structures of oppression and modern power and helps empower those who consult me to take primary authorship in writing the story of their lives. I'm experienced in helping people cope with a range of mental health challenges, and my goal is to provide a safe, caring environment Often times taking the first step toward change is intimidating, and I am here to help. Although common emotional challenges affect one in three adults, few individuals seek appropriate help and unfortunately their sense of well-being, relationships, and careers suffer because of it. Whether you are struggling with an existing psychiatric condition or are stuck and looking for answers, I can provide the space and guidance for healing and personal growth.

I treat executives and high functioning people with addiction and alcoholism, many have underlying disorders such as general anxiety disorders, depression, obsessive/compulsive disorders, and adult ADD/ADHD. Even though I am a Psychiatrist , I prefer to treat patients with psychotherapy or combination therapy of medicine and therapy (The Gold Standard of Treatment). I believe that people can always benefit from learning more about themselves, their behavior and their symptoms.

Self-Harming Psychiatrists
How does therapy for self-harm work?
A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.
Which therapies are best for self-harm?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.
Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?
Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
