Psychoanalytic Psychiatrists in New York
Drawing from a variety of traditions, including evidence-based psychopharmacology, psychoanalytic theory, and Buddhist wisdom, we will work in our initial sessions to develop a treatment plan.
It is no small task to lead a fulfilling life with meaningful relationships and a sense of purpose. In times of suffering, that goal can seem impossible. When our usual ways of adapting to stress fail, we need an outside perspective to guide us to a deeper understanding of our harmful and at times destructive mental patterns. There is no simple algorithm for healing the complex wounds formed over a lifetime. For some, a carefully tailored medication regimen can be helpful, leading to relatively quick relief of debilitating symptoms. For others a purely psychotherapeutic approach may be a better fit.

Psychotherapy and Psychopharmacology: Accurate diagnosis is paramount in psychiatry, and this requires adequate time, in order to develop rapport and understanding. For treatment, I apply the various tools of psychodynamic-expressive- psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and, when medically indicated, I may recommend, carefully prescribe, and monitor psychotropic (or psychoactive) medication (psychopharmacology/pharmacotherapy), across all diagnostic categories.

Psychoanalytic theory offers a profound and ever evolving understanding of human nature and development.
As a psychoanalytically trained psychiatrist, I provide comprehensive treatment for a variety of mental health problems informed by the view of each person as an integrated body/mind/brain individual. The state of that integration is reflected in the physical, emotional and social wellbeing, manifesting in depressed and anxious states, as well as a variety of other mental and/or physical problems. Treatment recommendations are based on the assessment of these disturbances in the context of understanding personal history, as well as present day life demands and aspirations. They include individual, couples or family psychotherapy, with psychotropic medication if indicated.

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.
How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.
Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.
Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
