Are you feeling overwhelmed or anxious with life or a relationship? Or more shut down or depressed? Unable to keep up with your daily routine? Patterns develop while growing up in our families of origin that no longer work or produce symptoms. We work on understanding those attachment patterns historically and in the present in order to reflect and change them. I teach tools to help people process the energy from feeling states in their nervous systems so a wider range of feelings can be experienced without flooding or shutting down. Then we reprocess the traumatic memories that feed the symptoms.

Whatever your reasons for seeking care include depression, OCD, hallucinations, ADHD, bipolar disorder, or just wanting to perform better at work, everyone can respond to treatment and has potential to feel better.
I am a Board Certified Psychiatrist, licensed in New York. I have trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, family and marital therapy. I have always felt that the brain is the most important and neglected organ in the body, and taking care of the brain is the key to well being. I take a holistic approach to care, evaluating for physical, nutrition, hormones, situational and psychodynamic causes of illness, whilst practicing evidence based psychiatry. I have a background in integrative psychiatry and HIV psychiatry. I believe that everyone has value, and everyone deserves the best care.

When the worry, or the pain, or the fear of our current situation is standing in front of us like a brick wall, what if we could see beyond that present wall? Would seeing what lies beyond the present change how it's affecting us? When triggered by the right stressors, the genes we are born with can lead to anxiety, depression, mood swings, substance abuse, suicidal thoughts, hallucinations. And throughout life, we may experience abuse, neglect, loss, poverty, trauma and situations that make us feel “stuck.”

Nothing’s been the same since your cancer diagnosis. First was shock and disbelief. Is this really happening to me? Then came the anger, quickly followed by anxiety and depression. You had a plan for your life, but that’s all been turned upside down. The future has never felt more uncertain. You want to sit down and take some time to process this news. But you’ve become buried under a host of new responsibilities. Now, you spend every day on a barrage of doctor’s appointments, diagnostic tests, and critical treatment decisions. Friends and family offer help, but you’re scared of being a burden to them. It all feels so overwhelming.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist working with patients for over twenty years to address emotional difficulties. At one time or another, we may all experience anxiety, depression, problems with intimacy or difficulties with self-esteem. I offer individualized treatment through personal interaction and insight, with a strong grounding in theory and clinical expertise. With some patients, I employ a psychodynamic approach, in others cases, a more targeted cognitive-behavorial approach is enough. At our initial meeting we will work together to determine the best treatment for your individual needs. Visit my website to learn more.

Each person who comes to see me has his or her own unique story, and I will do my best, through careful listening grounded upon years of specialized training and experience, to understand what is troubling you and what could help you move forward. You may be seeking help with relationships, work, parenting, identity, or problems with depression, anxiety, or other issues. Many people who seek help worry that their problems are too long-standing to get better, or are simply a product of circumstances. But neither of these ideas needs to get in the way of productive treatment.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
