My ideal clients are children, adolescents, and adults who are struggling with anxiety, depression, ADHD, or other emotional challenges. They seek balance in their lives, desiring not only symptom relief but also wellness. They want someone who listens, provides comprehensive care, and offers guidance through therapy and, when appropriate, medication. These clients are driven by a desire for a fuller life, improved relationships, and better mental health, knowing that physical health and psychological well-being are interconnected.

The ideal client is quite simply someone who truly wants help. Someone who is willing to work where the goal is to live the best life, reach the goals one seeks, and to enjoy the journey. The details of how that is done of course depends on the individual's station at the time one seeks help.

I prescribed medications to help people manage anxiety, depression, and ADHD to rebalance and become a new you.
Hi, All. I’m Charles. Do you find that your family and friends don’t understand what you are going through? Do you feel like you are spinning your wheels and unable to complete your tasks at school or work? Or are you holding it together for everyone else but feel like anxiety is making you unravel? Perhaps you feel like you are down and disinterested in what you used to do. I know that it is hard to pull it together by ourselves sometimes.

I regard empathy, responsiveness, and respect for the patient as core therapeutic values. While I tailor treatment to the individual, as a psychoanalyst I place special importance on gaining insight about unconscious contributors to current difficulties. I also appreciate the importance of clarifying and resolving here-and-now problems. When appropriate I prescribe medications or work short-term. My style is collaborative rather than authoritarian. For many years I have taught psychotherapy and psychoanalysis to trainees in these fields. I also teach professional ethics. I have published in the major journals in my field and am a training and supervising psychoanalyst.

Often the tribulations and traumas of life can expose our personal vulnerabilities, causing us to feel overwhelmed, unhappy in our relationships, and dissatisfied with our lives. Yet hu man beings are innately resilient and with the right support and guidance, we can not only diminish our suffering but cultivate greater understanding, deeper relationships, and wisdom. My aim is to use my advanced training in existential philosophy, positive psychology, and psychoanalysis to work collaboratively and compassionately with clients to help them feel better, develop greater insight, and develop greater sense of meaning in life.

This ability to have your therapy and medication managed by the same provider is frequently of added benefit.
Adjustments can often be challenging. Whether it may be a shift in career, end to a relationship, or change in phase of life, these transitions can frequently disrupt our usual patterns of thinking and behavior. My professional experience has found that having an interested, empathetic, and active listener as a psychotherapist can be extremely beneficial in assisting not only with these difficult times, but also with unforeseen situations bound to occur in the future.

My areas of expertise in Adult Psychiatry include: anxiety disorders (obsessive-compulsive, PTSD, dissociative disorders); depression (including atypical and treatment resistant subtypes); bipolar disorders; pain management and other medico-psychiatric conditions; addictions and substance abuse; problems of aging. By practicing for over 40 years I came to realize that every individual is able to change his or her way of thinking and feeling, provided the client is willing to do so. My role is to individualize which role medications and psychotherapy may play for each client, in which combination, and to act accordingly.

Male Psychiatrists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
