To patients with psychiatric concerns around preconception, pregnancy, or the postpartum, I offer both one-time consults and ongoing psychiatric care.
I am a Harvard-trained psychiatrist treating adults and couples in metro Boston, with same week appointments currently available. Appointments are offered both via telehealth and in-person at my office in Boston's Financial District, convenient to all MBTA lines. I completed my residency in psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital, where I pursued advanced training in perinatal and reproductive psychiatry, couples therapy, and LGBTQIA+ psychiatry. Beyond these areas of special expertise, I also see adults with general psychiatric concerns, including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, OCD, and ADHD.

Some people are concerned that meds will change them or may have had a bad experience with meds. Some have had great success and want to continue or optimize treatment. With a comprehensive 90-minute eval, I work to understand your concerns and goals. You will not be treated as a label or an algorithm. Together, we create a dynamic plan to help you feel like the best you. When done with care, treatment can help you feel less down, tired or worried and feel more motivated, focused, and well without changing who you are or sedating or numbing you.

As a college student, you may suddenly have to master every aspect of your life with little guidance in college. Have you wondered why you hold such high expectations for yourself? Why do you constantly worry about how others see you? Why do you prioritize others’ feelings over yours? How can you focus on classes and complete assignments on time? You may feel lost and confused. This can lead to sadness, fatigue, loss of interest in activities, or constant anxiety about things that don’t seem to bother others. You may feel like you’ve lost control of your emotions.

I am a board certified, Harvard-trained psychiatrist and specialize in helping people identify and manage ADHD, postpartum and peripartum emotional distress, anxiety, and depression.
PRACTICE IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED TO NEW PATIENTS... I aim to be as transparent as possible so as to help you to identify if I might be that person for you. This is vital because it is crucial for you to trust your psychiatrist and feel confident that your concerns and needs will be addressed in a sensitive, respectful, and nonjudgmental way. Whether you are a new mom or dad struggling with the challenges of new parenthood, having difficulty adapting to a new job or role, feeling worried and overwhelmed, or feeling down and withdrawn, I may be able to help you recover and improve your quality of life.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Psychiatrists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
