There is a saying in clinical medicine, "the patient is the greatest teacher”, as I've learned from over 25 years of valuable experience.
My comprehensive 90-minute initial evaluation includes your history of response or side effects to medications, and what has or hasn’t been tried to guide treatment decisions. Also, your family history, including relatives who may have suffered from a mood, anxiety and/or substance use disorder regardless whether or not they sought treatment.
In addition to my psychiatric practice, I supervise residents and lecture to graduate students in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at NYU, a vital and ongoing process of learning through teaching that keeps my clinical skills and knowledge base up to date.
