Hi, my name is Jacqueline Thompson (Jackie). I am a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP). I live in Raleigh, NC, where I have been a PMHNP for over four years. In total, I have 18 years of nursing experience, and I have been a psychiatric nurse for nearly all of that time. Every patient is different, and I view my work with each of them as a collaborative process. In that collaboration, I encourage my patient to take control of their illnesses and voice their needs. I make sure they know I am there to listen to them, and that together, we can devise a plan of care that works for them.
Seeing my patient’s symptoms improve, seeing them experience joy, and building a meaningful connection with them as a collaborator in their plan of care—these are the things that make my job worthwhile. I discussed with them that there is so much stigma surrounding mental health, and that stigma can have a negative impact on their recovery.
My patients should expect an introduction and review of paperwork, building rapport, discussion of goals and concerns, assessment and getting their history, discussion of the treatment process, clarification of expectations, exploration of their feelings, collaboration, and goal setting.
