Dr. Onyejiaka, a Board Certified Psychiatrist and Pediatrician, received her Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Missouri at Kansas City Combined B.A/M.D. Program. She endured further training at the Tulane University Triple Board Residency Program where she specialized in pediatric medicine, general psychiatry, as well as child and adolescent psychiatry. Additionally, she attended in the New Orleans'-Birmingham Psychoanalytic Center Honorary Fellowship Program prior to relocating to Chicago in recent years. Dr. Onyejiaka is an active member of the International Society for Sports Psychiatry, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

As a provider, I enjoy connecting with clients and getting to know them on a personal level. Once I can understand the person and their journey, together we can develop goals for achieving and maintaining their mental health. I understand that reaching out for help is not always easy, but I am willing to meet them where they are. My passion is treating adults with mood and anxiety disorders, PTSD, substance use disorders, BIPOC clients, and LGBTQIA+ identifying clients. I am currently accepting new patients, both in person and virtual.

My educational background includes a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing and a Master’s of Science in Nursing, specializing in Psychiatric-Mental Health. I am also board-certified as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

I have had an outpatient practice for 41 years. During my residency at Michael Reese Hospital, I taught a psychiatry course to medical students. After graduation I worked at Illinois Masonic Hospital in a women's health clinic addressing the emotional needs of women. I also worked at both a nursing home and assisted living facility doing both talk therapy and medication. I enjoy working with both young and older adults from varied backgrounds. For every new patient, Melissa provides a comprehensive initial psychiatric assessment, and offers subsequent mental health treatment including medication management and individual psychotherapy.
