Dr. Begel received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Yale University, where he also completed his residency in psychiatry. At Yale he studied the conceptual foundations of psychiatry and the core principles of diverse treatment methods. Today he treats people for a wide variety of issues, from the seemingly mild to the severe. He is up to date on psychiatric research and treatment, and utilizes the full range of methods in his work, including genetic analysis, psychotherapy, and medication management.
In addition to his basic clinical work, Dr. Begel pioneered the field of Sport Psychiatry, writing the seminal paper in this field, editing the first textbook, and founding the first professional society. He also does research in the area of “acoustic psychometry,” the measurement of mental states using speech acoustics.
Dr. Begel believes in the uniqueness of each individual, and the importance of collaboration, open dialogue, and trust. He tailors his work to his patients' needs, not to their diagnoses. He offers kindness, clarity, and hope.
