The job of a good clinician should be to find out what is causing those symptoms, and then to diagnose and treat those causes, sometimes with medications, sometimes with psychotherapies. Instead, many people receive a drug for each symptom, or psychotherapies instead of appropriate medications. They are then overtreated in many cases, undertreated in others. My approach is to treat diseases, when present, not symptoms. And my approach to diagnosis goes beyond simplistic reliance on DSM labels.
