I am a Board Certified Psychiatrist and provide medication management as well as psychotherapy to late teens and adults. My treatment philosophy incorporates a humanistic mind-body approach that appreciates the unique strengths and cultural background of each individual. My emphasis is on helping and not medicating. I strongly value the therapeutic relationship and make every effort to ensure that each patient's experience in treatment is comfortable and safe. And, importantly, I firmly believe in walking down the treatment path together.

My personal philosophy is that each of us has a basic need to be deeply understood by another human being. We all yearn, suffer, and celebrate, often privately, and often in ways that are not fully known even to ourselves. I strive to help each person feel safe enough that such private and unknown thoughts and feelings can emerge and be explored together. Whether you are looking for help through a crisis or with a long-standing illness or sense of discontent, my aim is to understand who you uniquely are and how I can help you heal and grow.

I spent much of the past decade overseeing an anxiety-focused clinical program at UCSF and teaching about the neuroscience of fear and anxiety at the school of medicine. So when I decided to build a psychiatry practice closer to home, I knew I wanted to continue that specialty focus in my own community.

I am a psychiatrist specializing in the treatment of adults and adolescents with addictions, mood disorders, personality disorders, ADHD, anxiety, and psychosis. I offer both medication management and psychotherapy. My approach to medications is a conservative one: I use medications (including Suboxone) only when patients have a full understanding of their risks and benefits, and I am willing to help patients taper or discontinue medications that provide little benefit, or which cause harm. At all times, I am eager to collaborate with other providers (therapists, counselors, alternative medicine specialists) to provide the optimal care for my patients.

The process of healing is a collaborative effort. Your role is to share with me your concerns and any issues which interfere with your or your loved one's daily life. Whether it be depression, anxiety, attention/focus or another mental heath topic, identifying the core issue is our first goal. I will then offer you my expert training and experience to recommend the best course of treatment to consider. Working together we will navigate along the healing process towards a happy, productive and satisfying quality of life.

I have been a general adult psychiatrist for 30 years, practicing at the interface of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy as an in-depth generalist. I offer an integrated model of psychiatric and psychological treatment, emphasizing mind/body interface. My modal patient has one or more psychiatric diagnoses and has failed one or more trials of psychiatric medication in a split treatment model (in which the primary care physician or the psychiatrist has prescribed while a psychologist or MFT has overseen therapy). There was usually little to no collaboration among those two treatment providers. I believe that treatment outcome is optimized with a strong physician/patient alliance.

We all have concerns that can leave us, well...uncomfortable. Depression, social anxiety, marriage issues, self-doubt, impaired focus...any of these can keep us from living our best lives. At the Couch Psychiatry Group, we treat the spectrum of mental health issues with special focus on anxiety, depression, and ADHD. Our goal is to empower you to recognize the dysfunctional patterns that have kept you stuck in the mire and give you the tools to fix them in the present and avoid them in the future.

Sleep or Insomnia Psychiatrists
How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.
Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.
Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.
What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
