My passion is helping clients rediscover their true potentials and bring joy back into their lives. I follow a strengths-based model of practice while utilizing a combination of psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral techniques. Essentially, I believe in a holistic approach, in that all of our experiences (physical, emotional, spiritual, and social) are integral in our unique compositions. Our early experiences often show up in our current lives, and can manifest themselves in a myriad of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. I value the interaction with my clients and believe in empowering clients by direct participation in the therapeutic process.
Perceptions of widows can often be inaccurate. Families, culture, religious communities often fail to understand widows' needs and grief. Widows themselves are surprised by the after affects of their "new normal." They tell me they "feel as if still in a fog." Life changes, financial hardships arise. Change brings its own challenges. In small groups or in individual therapy, widowhood is addressed in practical and thoughtful ways, I provide a space in which widows may feel better understood in their adjustments to life after loss. We talk, write, and create by "cutting and pasting life back together."

As a Clinical Psychologist with 30+ years of experience, I strive to help you find pathways to enjoy your life, feel more deeply connected to others, and to enhance your sense of meaning in life. My goal is to help you find ways to better cope with the difficulties that bring you to therapy and make healthy changes that enhance the quality of your life. I provide evidence-based therapeutic interventions in a warm, supportive, and professional therapeutic environment. My approach is collaborative and tailored to the personal history and present goals of each of my clients.
Story workshops offer an opportunity to explore life themes in a small group setting. It can be healing when one explores life in a supportive environment with a trained facilitator to guide the process. Participants will have the opportunity to learn how styles of relating impact communication with others. Teaching time will explore codependent patterns, shame, boundaries, and deeply engrained beliefs that can lead to relationship stressors. Through teaching and group interactions, participants receive encouragement and support as they come to understand themselves, resulting in more authentic and transformative ways of living. Workshops meet weekly for six weeks and are capped at five participants.
I take a relational approach when working with clients. We have all been shaped by both our personal history and intergenerational history. Anyone who would invest considerable time, energy, emotion, and money into therapy desires clarity and awareness. Oftentimes, clients have never been given a safe place to process the underlying reasons for the present-day issues. Nor have they been asked the right questions that would help them reflect on the joy and pain that was and is present. This is needed to develop a sense of self. We were harmed in relationship and we heal in relationship. This is why therapy is so powerful.
A safe place to process the journey of dealing with cancer. Guided sharing around weekly topics from a Christian perspective. Free of Charge. Facilitated by Keith Orr, Gateway Counseling Intern. Please RSVP 360-394-4158.
Are you needing help navigating some storms in your life? Are you struggling inside? I will partner with you through the internal struggles that could be self-doubt, past traumatic events, or present unresolved issues. Do you want to resolve current issues or trauma and be educated on strategies to handle other similar issues in the future? I can help you to build a solid interior foundation as a base for future successes. You need a safe space to address all of the fears swirling around in your head. You and I will come up with a plan to identify and organize your fears in a way that will allow us to address them one at a time.
To help adults interested in understanding their psychosocial temperament, I use a personality profiler called Enneagram which is a diagnostic tool that enables us to look AT our "lenses" instead of looking THROUGH them. There is a 9-pointed diagram that describes 9 basic personality types based on their unique ways of framing and relating to the world. Uncovering our inner motivations and social drives unique to our personalities can help us find ways to grow and change for the good of all our relationships. Knowing ourselves better–both light and shadow – helps smooth the way for a better life.

I offer land-based therapy. This work entails an embodied experience of healing through a collaboration with nature and myself. I believe wholeheartedly that our wellness is interwoven with the health of our environment and remembering we are also nature. My office is outdoors, on land being stewarded to enhance the prairie ecosystem and support sustainable food practices. A typical session will include mindfulness practices to regulate the nervous system, activity that supports a relationship not just with self, but also connecting to land, typically through gardening and other land stewarding practices.

FAQs - About Group Therapy and Support Groups
How can I find a support group in Kitsap County?
Search for nearby support groups by inputting your city, zip code, or the name of the group into the search bar. From there, you can filter to find a group that suits your needs, whether you are looking for support for a teenager, a group that focuses on a specific issue, such as depression, or a particular program type, such as one geared toward developing social skills. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.
How does group therapy work?
Therapy groups are led by one or more therapists and serve to help people process their experiences and learn from others who understand their challenges firsthand. They can be based on a specific issue, such as addiction, grief, physical illnesses, parenting, and caregiving. They can involve a specific type of program or therapy, such as a social skills group or CBT group. They can also be specific to a particular population or community, such as teens or LGBTQ.
Support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous, also focus on a specific issue, but are typically led by members with lived experiences and are less structured than therapy groups. Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.

Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.
What are the benefits of group therapy?
Support groups help connect people with shared challenges or physical and mental health conditions. In a group setting, participants can receive support and feedback from peers and can acquire new skills, strategies and perspectives by listening to one another. Discussing your experience with someone who also has a cancer diagnosis, or whose son also struggles with addiction, for example, can help you feel less alone, reduce distress, find empathy and connection, and learn practical or medical information that has helped others. Group therapy can also be a more affordable option than individual therapy and just as effective.
Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?
Support groups can be deeply valuable for both emotional support and/or treatment outcomes. It’s difficult to make a blanket statement on efficacy due to the many different types of support groups and conditions treated, but group therapy has been found to be just as effective as individual therapy in establishing long-term abstinence for conditions such as substance abuse, addiction and alcohol abuse.
How much does group therapy cost?
Group counseling is typically less expensive than individual counseling, with each session costing on average between $60 to $75. Meanwhile, individual therapy sessions can run anywhere from $100 to $200 and up, even after insurance. It is possible to find low-cost group therapy options and many therapists offer group sessions free of charge.
Does insurance cover group therapy?
As with individual therapy, many insurance companies do offer coverage for group therapy sessions. However, the coverage varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider. Individuals are encouraged to check with their insurance providers to verify coverage.
How long does group therapy last?
The length of a support group session is often one hour but can fall anywhere between 45 minutes and two hours. The amount of time that people remain in a support group varies based on their specific needs and goals and the type of therapy. Some individuals may seek a shorter-term group, such as a bereavement group, that may last between six and 20 weeks. Some may seek a longer-term group that lasts for a year or indefinitely.
What are the limitations of support groups?
Support groups have many benefits, but there are a few limitations as well. Support groups do not constitute formal therapeutic or medical treatment, and are not run by licensed mental health professionals, so some people may opt for group therapy or individual therapy instead. Additionally, support groups can depend on the other participants, so a disruptive individual has the potential to mar the group dynamic, and the anecdotal information shared may sometimes be unhelpful or inaccurate. Because it is a group setting, confidentiality can be more difficult to guard and participants receive less personalized attention than they would in an individual therapy session.
