Over the past 30 years, a combination of diverse experiences and extensive training have made me the therapist I am today. I have always been interested in what makes us who we are. How much is nature or nurture, what are we born with and does the environment shape us. Psychotherapy provides a safe space for people to make meaning about their lives, the choices they make in school, work and love. Therapy is a process. Though there is often no simple, quick solution, it provides a safe space to explore in-depth, emotions, thoughts and actions to bring about change.

What does the shape of our lives reveal about our ideologies and our narrative of reality? How does psychotherapy help us examine this? The analytic space is dedicated to moving beyond the pressures of institutions and societal constraints that preexist us in order to seek the particular desires and needs in each of us. In treatment, we confront ourselves and our unique experience of the world so that we can explore possibilities for transformation. I am attuned to how one’s suffering may intersect with intimate relationships, inherited traumas, and systemic oppression. I welcome patients from diverse and non-normative backgrounds.

Life transitions can be painful. When we feel sadness or anxiety, we may feel empty and alone, often leading to further distance and lack of connection. Building inner capacity allows for openness and movement towards a better relationship with ourselves and others, in turn, creating long term resilience and self-awareness. I believe that if you are open to this kind of exploration in therapy, I can help you. Working through an anti-oppressive, empowerment lens, I will meet you in the moment, work creatively to bring light to ongoing patterns, and work collaboratively with you- as you are.

Using creative expression - art, drama etc, and coaching techniques. My co facilitator and I work with you in a group of no more than 6-8 women, ages 40+, as you focus on an area of your life where you feel stuck, and help you move into action. Women who participate experience community, creativity and action; and leave the day with concrete goals and a new ability to make them happen. And it's fun! Upcoming workshop dates to be announced. Please contact me to learn more.

Imagine connecting to yourself and others in new ways by getting clear that within you is a resiliency, a capacity to thrive even as part/s of you may be depressed, anxious, struggle with relationships, and/or are self critical. Imagine beginning to trust that your life can be more of what you want it to be. Working together in a supportive and open way, we can integrate talk, art and other forms of creativity to explore your life. As the creation of a new idea, feeling and/or image arises, as you reframe your past, master feelings, recognize resiliencies, and create new thought patterns - growth and healing occurs.

DBT is an evidence-based program that has been proven to help teens: handle their emotions so they are less reactive and impulsive, eliminate self-harm and destructive behaviors, and better navigate their relationships (family, school, peers) by developing communication strategies and positive ways of interacting with others. DBT helps increase focus, improving school performance and building higher self-esteem so teens learn to love and accept themselves. Group therapy allows teens to connect and practice skills with peers in a structured safe space, offering a new perspective and validation from others experiencing similar situations. Parent support is also provided.

Systemic Constellation Therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach that looks at any psychological – mental, emotional, relational, behavioral – issue as a systemic phenomenon. It is a uniquely effective technique to understand not only the deeper dynamics of an individual person, but those of couples, families, businesses and organizations as well. Systemic Family Constellation Therapy can reveal unconscious family dynamics and transgenerational influences with a unique plasticity and a distinct emotional impact leading to profound insights and cathartic experiences. Whether you’re facing a new problem or an older one, I would love to be here for you to listen and to help. I’ve worked with many clients who are trying to explore and better understand who they are, to understand their relationships with friends and lovers, or who are grappling with major life changes like relocation, changing careers, or recovering from painful past experiences. Hi and thanks for taking a look at my profile. Finding the right therapist can feel overwhelming, especially since most of us are doing so during a time of stress or crisis. My approach to therapy is very relational and experiential. I believe that healing and transformation can happen only in the context of a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship. It's a huge step to reach out to a therapist for help. I hope I can make it as easy as possible for you and look forward to talking further to see if we're a good therapy match.

FAQs - About Group Therapy and Support Groups

How can I find a support group in New York?

Search for nearby support groups by inputting your city, zip code, or the name of the group into the search bar. From there, you can filter to find a group that suits your needs, whether you are looking for support for a teenager, a group that focuses on a specific issue, such as depression, or a particular program type, such as one geared toward developing social skills. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

How does group therapy work?

Therapy groups are led by one or more therapists and serve to help people process their experiences and learn from others who understand their challenges firsthand. They can be based on a specific issue, such as addiction, grief, physical illnesses, parenting, and caregiving. They can involve a specific type of program or therapy, such as a social skills group or CBT group. They can also be specific to a particular population or community, such as teens or LGBTQ.

Support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous, also focus on a specific issue, but are typically led by members with lived experiences and are less structured than therapy groups. Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.

What are the benefits of group therapy?

Support groups help connect people with shared challenges or physical and mental health conditions. In a group setting, participants can receive support and feedback from peers and can acquire new skills, strategies and perspectives by listening to one another. Discussing your experience with someone who also has a cancer diagnosis, or whose son also struggles with addiction, for example, can help you feel less alone, reduce distress, find empathy and connection, and learn practical or medical information that has helped others. Group therapy can also be a more affordable option than individual therapy and just as effective.

Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?

Support groups can be deeply valuable for both emotional support and/or treatment outcomes. It’s difficult to make a blanket statement on efficacy due to the many different types of support groups and conditions treated, but group therapy has been found to be just as effective as individual therapy in establishing long-term abstinence for conditions such as substance abuse, addiction and alcohol abuse.

How much does group therapy cost?

Group counseling is typically less expensive than individual counseling, with each session costing on average between $60 to $75. Meanwhile, individual therapy sessions can run anywhere from $100 to $200 and up, even after insurance. It is possible to find low-cost group therapy options and many therapists offer group sessions free of charge.

Does insurance cover group therapy?

As with individual therapy, many insurance companies do offer coverage for group therapy sessions. However, the coverage varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider. Individuals are encouraged to check with their insurance providers to verify coverage.

How long does group therapy last?

The length of a support group session is often one hour but can fall anywhere between 45 minutes and two hours. The amount of time that people remain in a support group varies based on their specific needs and goals and the type of therapy. Some individuals may seek a shorter-term group, such as a bereavement group, that may last between six and 20 weeks. Some may seek a longer-term group that lasts for a year or indefinitely.

What are the limitations of support groups?

Support groups have many benefits, but there are a few limitations as well. Support groups do not constitute formal therapeutic or medical treatment, and are not run by licensed mental health professionals, so some people may opt for group therapy or individual therapy instead. Additionally, support groups can depend on the other participants, so a disruptive individual has the potential to mar the group dynamic, and the anecdotal information shared may sometimes be unhelpful or inaccurate. Because it is a group setting, confidentiality can be more difficult to guard and participants receive less personalized attention than they would in an individual therapy session.
