Therapy is, above all, a partnership. As your therapist, I create a space where you are heard, validated, and accepted as you are. Many of us have very few places in our lives where we can be our most authentic selves. It is through this level of trust and respect that true transformation and healing can occur. My style is collaborative, compassionate, and empowering. I will help you to see all your inherent strengths that depression, anxiety, or life stressors may be clouding your vision of. Through our therapeutic connection and evidence-based strategies, we can clear the lens and allow you to envision the path forward.

This is a closed group, with a minimum commitment of 12 weeks/groups. We've all found ourselves in a crisis, in conflict with someone or overwhelmed by emotion or circumstances. It can sometimes be difficult to maintain emotional balance. It takes skills to solve life's problems while enduring intense emotion. In DBT, four skills modules are taught. The intent is to help with anger, episodic depression, anxiety, intense relationships, impulsivity, stress and feelings of emptiness. New skills are presented each week and the goal is to gain new skills and to use them when really needed.

DBT has 3 components; individual therapy, skills training, and phone coaching. The skills training is a 16 week program for teens that teaches DBT skills. The group meets weekly for 90 minutes on Monday nights and cover the following: Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance, and Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills. There is an additional module called 'Walking the Middle Path' that is also offered that involves parents with their children and teaches skills that are essential to families with teens. These skills are the foundation of DBT and are utilized in treatment.

Over the past 30+ years, I have treated the varied emotional problems of several diverse generations. Those clients who worked hard and gave significant time to the treatment were all, for the most part, able to put their relationships in order and further enhance them as well as becoming rather successful in their work. My mentor, an analysand of Erich Fromm, told me long ago that "each person has his/her own poetry." My job was to let it unfold. It all sounded very lofty but time revealed that this was the way.

Our Adult Services program helps chemically-dependent adults take the crucial first steps towards recovery. This not only means accepting their physiological or psychological dependency, but also facing the relationship problems, economic hardships, or personal insecurities that may have pushed them to use drugs or alcohol in the first place. It means facing life on life’s terms, accepting personal responsibility – and doing so clean and sober.

The YMCA's programs are based around several key beliefs, developed from our extensive history of treating and preventing alcoholism and substance abuse. While specific treatment plans will vary from client to client, there is a guiding principle that drives our services: We treat families. We maintain open communication with every involved person who is willing and able to offer support to our clients. From children, to high-risk teens, to persons in recovery, we serve not only the client themselves, but also the people around them - their parents, siblings, children and family members.

Perception of one's life can often be challenging, confusing, misleading, scary, stressful, depressing & this list could be endless based on situations, environment, perception & an unlimited plethora of variables. This leads to anxiety over the very situations occurring as well as depression based on the potential for negative outcomes of those circumstances. This group will address topics weekly causing this-such as loss/grief, children, spouses, work, colleagues, etc. & cover numerous coping mechanisms while learning to manage emotion & manage to obtain a smile if only for a moment during group. This will be the beginning of cognitively restructuring negative thoughts.

This group will help individuals to work on internal issues via mindful meditation, discussion, viewing important film, listening to music, as we as individuals and collectively as a group move toward understanding or illuminating our own spiritual crisis. With the emphasis of deepening our understanding of who we are,why we are on the planet. We shift towards living a more purposeful, meaningful, satisfying and joyful life. Essentially we begin to work to make our world internally and externally a better place. This is a powerful and worthwhile journey, and one where we learn to love the journey of life.

Racing thoughts and feelings of self-doubt are common until they become overwhelming. When that happens, do we run away or face it head-on? Sometimes, when we feel stuck, a little guidance from an unbiased, nonjudgmental source can make all the difference. Therapy can support those grappling with friendships, relationships, careers, and family challenges. I'm also a strong advocate for work-life balance and am passionate about improving access to quality mental health care by addressing issues of equity and justice within the field.

FAQs - About Group Therapy and Support Groups

How can I find a support group in Staten Island?

Search for nearby support groups by inputting your city, zip code, or the name of the group into the search bar. From there, you can filter to find a group that suits your needs, whether you are looking for support for a teenager, a group that focuses on a specific issue, such as depression, or a particular program type, such as one geared toward developing social skills. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

How does group therapy work?

Therapy groups are led by one or more therapists and serve to help people process their experiences and learn from others who understand their challenges firsthand. They can be based on a specific issue, such as addiction, grief, physical illnesses, parenting, and caregiving. They can involve a specific type of program or therapy, such as a social skills group or CBT group. They can also be specific to a particular population or community, such as teens or LGBTQ.

Support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous, also focus on a specific issue, but are typically led by members with lived experiences and are less structured than therapy groups. Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.

What are the benefits of group therapy?

Support groups help connect people with shared challenges or physical and mental health conditions. In a group setting, participants can receive support and feedback from peers and can acquire new skills, strategies and perspectives by listening to one another. Discussing your experience with someone who also has a cancer diagnosis, or whose son also struggles with addiction, for example, can help you feel less alone, reduce distress, find empathy and connection, and learn practical or medical information that has helped others. Group therapy can also be a more affordable option than individual therapy and just as effective.

Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?

Support groups can be deeply valuable for both emotional support and/or treatment outcomes. It’s difficult to make a blanket statement on efficacy due to the many different types of support groups and conditions treated, but group therapy has been found to be just as effective as individual therapy in establishing long-term abstinence for conditions such as substance abuse, addiction and alcohol abuse.

How much does group therapy cost?

Group counseling is typically less expensive than individual counseling, with each session costing on average between $60 to $75. Meanwhile, individual therapy sessions can run anywhere from $100 to $200 and up, even after insurance. It is possible to find low-cost group therapy options and many therapists offer group sessions free of charge.

Does insurance cover group therapy?

As with individual therapy, many insurance companies do offer coverage for group therapy sessions. However, the coverage varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider. Individuals are encouraged to check with their insurance providers to verify coverage.

How long does group therapy last?

The length of a support group session is often one hour but can fall anywhere between 45 minutes and two hours. The amount of time that people remain in a support group varies based on their specific needs and goals and the type of therapy. Some individuals may seek a shorter-term group, such as a bereavement group, that may last between six and 20 weeks. Some may seek a longer-term group that lasts for a year or indefinitely.

What are the limitations of support groups?

Support groups have many benefits, but there are a few limitations as well. Support groups do not constitute formal therapeutic or medical treatment, and are not run by licensed mental health professionals, so some people may opt for group therapy or individual therapy instead. Additionally, support groups can depend on the other participants, so a disruptive individual has the potential to mar the group dynamic, and the anecdotal information shared may sometimes be unhelpful or inaccurate. Because it is a group setting, confidentiality can be more difficult to guard and participants receive less personalized attention than they would in an individual therapy session.
