It takes courage to reach out for help, something we all need at various times in our lives. My work as a narrative therapist over the past 25+ years has been grounded in the assumption that every human being is inherently resourceful. Behind every one of life's challenges lies the possibility for change. A collaborative, respectful relationship of safety that nurtures these possibilities is what I offer to all clients who consult with me.
Whether it’s navigating the uncertainty of post-pandemic industry shifts or the impending challenge of AI disrupting traditional career paths, the call to reimagine ourselves professionally has never been more compelling. Drawing on narrative therapy principles, this 4-week online group therapy series seeks to unravel dominant career narratives, explore identity & core values, and liberate ideas from societal constraints.

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who specializes in Anxiety Disorders/ OCD, Eating Disorders, and PTSD/Trauma. I approach my clients from a team stance, always making sure they have a well-rounded support base around them. I am EMDR trained and use it as a tool with my existing clients and as well as see clients who primarily seek EMDR sessions to move stuck experiences and core beliefs. To me, the importance of therapy is to get your life back into balance as addiction and trauma can create an "all or nothing" element and a repetition of patters and maladaptive behaviors.

This group will provide a safe space for gay men to heal from trauma. Unfortunately, gay men are more likely to experience trauma than straight men. And, it's often difficult for gay men to find a space to begin to unpack their traumatic experiences. That's what you'll experience in this group: a safe environment to recover from trauma. In fact, many folks find that the healing process is quicker in a group setting, rather than traditional individual therapy. Interested to learn more? I work primarily with gay men. As a gay man, it's easy to find yourself feeling disconnected and disheartened in today's society. Everyone seems to have money, success, good looks—and as much sex as they want. Even when we do achieve that external success and validation, we still don’t feel good enough. We frequently compare yourself to others. We feel insecure using hookup apps. And oftentimes we find ourselves just looking to escape into some distraction or substance. Many of us experienced a trauma that's gone unresolved for far too long. Or we experience an anxiety or depression that we can't seem to shake.
**There is currently a waitlist to join the group.** EmpowerHer is a nurturing sanctuary tailored for women, femmes, and nonbinary folks who have survived sexual trauma. Guided by Ashley Merriman, LCSW, this group offers a supportive environment where survivors can embark on their healing journey. Through a blend of psychoeducation, identity exploration, and empathetic sharing, participants will gain insights into trauma responses, coping mechanisms, and avenues for self-care. Through discussions with other survivors, participants can gain a deeper understanding of their experiences, a sense of belonging, and the tools necessary for healing. The group is hybrid, with monthly in person sessions.

Growing up, I have realized that there is a lack of communication, representation, and awareness of the importance of mental health in many Middle-Eastern, Latinx, and Asian households. This leads to many individuals in those cultures becoming oppressed throughout their whole life and experiencing many untreated phases of depression and anxiety without having the opportunity to be heard.
As of 11/2023, this group is active. It is for individuals looking to do CBT and DBT based therapy for anxiety, depression, bipolar, borderline personality.

Do you feel bombarded with evidence that you're coming up short? I operate from the stance that you aren’t a problem to be solved; we just need to bring loving curiosity to the stories playing on loop. I take a non-pathologizing, trauma-informed approach that honors how you’re situated in a rich context of familial and societal messaging. Together, we'll explore your patterns of relating to self and others, bring awareness to emotions and sensations in the here-and-now, and create movement toward your preferred ways of being. If you’re looking for a therapist who is basically David Rose meets early-00’s Britney (with a dash of Drag Race & a pinch of recycled WeHo go-go boy,) you’ve clicked on the right profile. But please don’t let my humor undercut the reverence & respect I have for the therapeutic process. Self-empowerment, radical acceptance & authentic human connection will be the cornerstone of our work. I utilize strength-based, affirmative & neuroscientific theory to guide us...but healing doesn't happen via theory. It lies in you -- your hopes, hardships, successes & infinite wisdom. Sometimes we'll laugh. Often, we'll cry. But either way...

Our goal at Los Angeles DBT is to make DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) accessible to everyone. We are psychotherapists who are "Intensively Trained" in DBT and provide DBT skills groups, individual sessions, and coaching. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is a skills-based treatment which helps you better regulate your emotions, especially the difficult ones. With DBT you will learn how to have more successful relationships with family, friends, & loved ones. DBT will also provide tools to increase your ability to manage distress, and be more mindful of your thoughts, feelings, and overall environment.

This group is an opportunity to process and grieve the pain of frustrations and misunderstandings of ourselves (and our world) prior to understanding ADHD's role in our life. Led by a fellow late diagnosed ADHDer, sessions will focus on supporting your needs, identifying the accommodations needed to thrive, and psychoeducation (Answers to "Does anyone else do this? Is this an ADHD thing? and more). Together we gain insight to rewrite an empowered narrative of ourselves.

I want to acknowledge if you’re looking for a therapist, it’s unlikely things are going as you hoped right now. That sucks and I get that. You deserve to live an empowered, embodied existence and I want to guide you on that journey. Together we will reignite or deepen your connection to yourself and others (romantic and platonic). I'll support you through hard and messy conversations, as we discover purpose, passion, and build insight; I'll stand by you as we cultivate self-love, worth, and esteem. Together we can rewrite your story so it works for you.
I facilitate two 16-week-long groups (of four) for therapists working with couples. The groups meet for two hours, with two therapists presenting each week as we use different modalities to understand and help our couples, including the Gottman Method, EFT, Attachment Theory, Interpersonal Neurobiology, and Mindfulness practice. We read various texts outside of group (such as Sue Johnson's Hold Me Tight and Bowlby's The Secure Base), which provide an evolving coherence and deepening to the work.

I have been in practice for over 30 years, helping clients to develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships. Life often challenges our ability to maintain equilibrium. Whether it's in work or love, choices are often linked to experiences or emotions that have not yet come to light. As we reflect on experiences, anxiety is lowered or becomes easier to bear. This leads to a greater ability to meet life goals--when we tolerate anxiety well enough to sort out true needs from a desire to escape a bad feeling, we tend to move toward those goals.
This group offers a weekly check-in for new parents around themes of self care, identity and mental health. Additionally, we engage in mindfulness practice, including some gentle stretching, in order to come home to our bodies and find ease in the mind. The group is open to parents of all genders, and is intended for parents of newborns and babies. Part process, part practice and part meet-up, this group fosters connection with self and others, and eases the adjustment to parenthood. The group includes monthly free park meet-ups, and babies are welcome to all meetings.

Welcome. I offer compassionate therapy that helps you get unstuck from frustrating cycles, disentangle anxious thoughts, and get grounded in your body. I often work with writers, performers and artists who are struggling to balance their creative practice with their relationships and mental health. I also am experienced in supporting people navigating the transition to parenthood, especially in the context of difficult relationships with their bodies, or with their own parents. My practice is non-pathologizing, LGBTQIA+ affirming, and aligned with Health at Every Size.

FAQs - About Group Therapy and Support Groups
How can I find a support group in Los Angeles?
Search for nearby support groups by inputting your city, zip code, or the name of the group into the search bar. From there, you can filter to find a group that suits your needs, whether you are looking for support for a teenager, a group that focuses on a specific issue, such as depression, or a particular program type, such as one geared toward developing social skills. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.
How does group therapy work?
Therapy groups are led by one or more therapists and serve to help people process their experiences and learn from others who understand their challenges firsthand. They can be based on a specific issue, such as addiction, grief, physical illnesses, parenting, and caregiving. They can involve a specific type of program or therapy, such as a social skills group or CBT group. They can also be specific to a particular population or community, such as teens or LGBTQ.
Support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous, also focus on a specific issue, but are typically led by members with lived experiences and are less structured than therapy groups. Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.

Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.
What are the benefits of group therapy?
Support groups help connect people with shared challenges or physical and mental health conditions. In a group setting, participants can receive support and feedback from peers and can acquire new skills, strategies and perspectives by listening to one another. Discussing your experience with someone who also has a cancer diagnosis, or whose son also struggles with addiction, for example, can help you feel less alone, reduce distress, find empathy and connection, and learn practical or medical information that has helped others. Group therapy can also be a more affordable option than individual therapy and just as effective.
Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?
Support groups can be deeply valuable for both emotional support and/or treatment outcomes. It’s difficult to make a blanket statement on efficacy due to the many different types of support groups and conditions treated, but group therapy has been found to be just as effective as individual therapy in establishing long-term abstinence for conditions such as substance abuse, addiction and alcohol abuse.
How much does group therapy cost?
Group counseling is typically less expensive than individual counseling, with each session costing on average between $60 to $75. Meanwhile, individual therapy sessions can run anywhere from $100 to $200 and up, even after insurance. It is possible to find low-cost group therapy options and many therapists offer group sessions free of charge.
Does insurance cover group therapy?
As with individual therapy, many insurance companies do offer coverage for group therapy sessions. However, the coverage varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider. Individuals are encouraged to check with their insurance providers to verify coverage.
How long does group therapy last?
The length of a support group session is often one hour but can fall anywhere between 45 minutes and two hours. The amount of time that people remain in a support group varies based on their specific needs and goals and the type of therapy. Some individuals may seek a shorter-term group, such as a bereavement group, that may last between six and 20 weeks. Some may seek a longer-term group that lasts for a year or indefinitely.
What are the limitations of support groups?
Support groups have many benefits, but there are a few limitations as well. Support groups do not constitute formal therapeutic or medical treatment, and are not run by licensed mental health professionals, so some people may opt for group therapy or individual therapy instead. Additionally, support groups can depend on the other participants, so a disruptive individual has the potential to mar the group dynamic, and the anecdotal information shared may sometimes be unhelpful or inaccurate. Because it is a group setting, confidentiality can be more difficult to guard and participants receive less personalized attention than they would in an individual therapy session.
