Relationships are powerful. They have the power to inspire us, help us grow, or they can smother and even damage us. We spend much of our time and energy engaged in relationships, tolerating, fixing, and avoiding relationships. I believe that relationships are powerful vehicles for change. As a psychotherapist, I offer a relationship that is warm, challenging, accepting, and personal where you can feel a full range of emotions, learn, grow, and attain your goals.

Our early years have a big impact on how we operate as adults. Our ways of being and personal struggles can often be traced back to our family of origin. How you were parented, the role you played in your family, the defenses you learned to get by or survive – these stay with you and inform how you operate in the world and in your relationships. Whatever your own history may have been, there's a place for what you learned and how you adapted; after all, it’s gotten you this far. But some of those early lessons have outlasted their usefulness and no longer serve you, leading to anxiety, depression, or chronic disconnection.
Additionally, I offer Telehealth Therapy to clients who reside in the states of Texas and Florida via Simple Practice. Please, feel free to contact me for more information or to schedule an appointment. Once scheduled, you will be given a link for our session and asked to wait in my virtual waiting room until our session begins. Please see the fee section to see my rates.

I will guide you through confusing issues, provide new perspectives, encourage you to exercise your strengths, and collaboratively find constructive and creative ways to move forward. This will allow you to experience yourself as more potent in your life and open possibilities in your future.

It is my goal to assist the client in determining what is keeping them from getting to the place that they want to be. Whether it be dealing with depression, relational issues, or personal addictions that are holding them back. It is my desire to explore with the client not only hindrances but also the tools the client already has to use. I also provide relational counseling for marriages or other significant relationships which you are desiring to improve and move forward in.
Our classes are on Zoom. We have a ten week program so people can practice the skills we discuss. You can begin any Thursday. Hardly anybody I know aspires to be that average, center-of-the-bell-curve person. In different ways, we all deviate from the norm, which explains our own uniqueness. My aim as a therapist is to work with individuals, couples, triads, and families in a way that celebrates their uniqueness and "incurable deviance." By meeting you where you are, with who you are, in a way that makes best use of your unique strengths, hopes, dreams, and quirks, we can work together as client(s) and therapist to help you address your current challenges, get lots more of what you want, develop skills, transform, and explore new choices available to you.

My counseling approach centers around empowerment, confidence, and self-love. I consider it my mission to aid those looking to reclaim themselves and their power. I take an intuitive approach to counseling that focuses on using the mind-body connection to deepen awareness and connection. I combine Internal Family Systems, somatic and trauma focused therapies, and solution-focused approaches to help you build a full relationship with yourself rather than just analyze your pain. We will use this in the present moment as we cultivate curiosity and find the best solutions for you.
These groups are designed for high-functioning women who want to strengthen their connections with others, receive support, and be challenged to be their best selves.

You're successful in so many areas of your life, but you're struggling in one or more of your relationships. You're not sure if the problem is you or others. You feel like you're communicating effectively, but those around you don't seem to hear or fully get you. By all accounts you've mastered the good life in your career and other achievements, but sometimes your personal relationships don't reflect this as well as you want it to. How great would you feel if you could make some small, powerful shifts that would change everything?
Often in sessions or personal conversations, I hear men talking about how hard it is to make conversation when meeting new people, or when in business meetings with colleagues. This kind of anxiety can often lead to isolation in our personal lives as well as difficulties in our professional lives. The group has members who identify as both gay and straight men. While the initial focus is centered around social anxiety and communication the group is ongoing reaching into issues and concerns beyond the initial focus which arise from the group members themselves. The group meets on Monday evenings in person, public health permitting.

Sometimes our lives can feel like an exercise in frustration. We may feel trapped, isolated and disconnected from people around us, including our families. Discordant relationships, anxiety, PTSD issues, LGBTQ issues, physical & emotional abuse, and substance use may impact us in harmful and destructive ways. Working together in a safe atmosphere, we can examine your particular struggles, find your hidden strengths, challenge outmoded habits, and develop solutions. Step by step, you will find ways to move forward out of the frustration of anxiety and depression, finding renewed hope, motivation and fulfillment: even joy!
Living with OCD can feel both overwhelming and isolating. Together, cognitive behavioral therapy, exposure and response prevention, and a supportive group environment form a powerful toolkit for clients, helping them to navigate the challenges of OCD with composure and resilience. By teaching practical skills to overcome OCD in a positive and supportive environment, this unique program cultivates well-being from the inside-out.

Everyone feels anxious at times. Anxiety motivates us to prepare for important events and protects us when we are in harm's way. However, anxiety becomes problematic when it is out of proportion to the situation in a way that interferes with daily activities. Though anxiety is very treatable, only about one-third of those suffering from an anxiety disorder receive treatment. With the right type of therapy, the prognosis for anxiety disorders is very good; however, without treatment, anxiety tends to become more debilitating.
This is a virtual DBT Skills Group that meets via Zoom. The group is didactic, feeling more like a class, and we learn DBT skills across four modules: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance. This group is a great fit for those who would like to cope more effectively with intense emotions, stop engaging in challenging or impulsive behaviors, manage conflict effectively and/or improve relationships. Groups have between 5-10 participants. Contact: grace@gmltherapy.com

My ideal client is one who is ready to begin the journey towards a better functioning family, and/or a happier life. That person wishes to move through their past experiences and begin the healing process. Healing may require a level of discomfort, but my ideal client has likely been uncomfortable before. That person is ready to feel safe and find the strength and comfort to provide connection with this clinician needed for goals like improved intimacy, decreased sadness or motivation, work-life balance, couples, family of origin issues, and trauma.

FAQs - About Group Therapy and Support Groups
How can I find a support group in Austin?
Search for nearby support groups by inputting your city, zip code, or the name of the group into the search bar. From there, you can filter to find a group that suits your needs, whether you are looking for support for a teenager, a group that focuses on a specific issue, such as depression, or a particular program type, such as one geared toward developing social skills. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.
How does group therapy work?
Therapy groups are led by one or more therapists and serve to help people process their experiences and learn from others who understand their challenges firsthand. They can be based on a specific issue, such as addiction, grief, physical illnesses, parenting, and caregiving. They can involve a specific type of program or therapy, such as a social skills group or CBT group. They can also be specific to a particular population or community, such as teens or LGBTQ.
Support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous, also focus on a specific issue, but are typically led by members with lived experiences and are less structured than therapy groups. Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.
What are the benefits of group therapy?
Support groups help connect people with shared challenges or physical and mental health conditions. In a group setting, participants can receive support and feedback from peers and can acquire new skills, strategies and perspectives by listening to one another. Discussing your experience with someone who also has a cancer diagnosis, or whose son also struggles with addiction, for example, can help you feel less alone, reduce distress, find empathy and connection, and learn practical or medical information that has helped others. Group therapy can also be a more affordable option than individual therapy and just as effective.
Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?
Support groups can be deeply valuable for both emotional support and/or treatment outcomes. It’s difficult to make a blanket statement on efficacy due to the many different types of support groups and conditions treated, but group therapy has been found to be just as effective as individual therapy in establishing long-term abstinence for conditions such as substance abuse, addiction and alcohol abuse.
How much does group therapy cost?
Group counseling is typically less expensive than individual counseling, with each session costing on average between $60 to $75. Meanwhile, individual therapy sessions can run anywhere from $100 to $200 and up, even after insurance. It is possible to find low-cost group therapy options and many therapists offer group sessions free of charge.
Does insurance cover group therapy?
As with individual therapy, many insurance companies do offer coverage for group therapy sessions. However, the coverage varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider. Individuals are encouraged to check with their insurance providers to verify coverage.
How long does group therapy last?
The length of a support group session is often one hour but can fall anywhere between 45 minutes and two hours. The amount of time that people remain in a support group varies based on their specific needs and goals and the type of therapy. Some individuals may seek a shorter-term group, such as a bereavement group, that may last between six and 20 weeks. Some may seek a longer-term group that lasts for a year or indefinitely.
What are the limitations of support groups?
Support groups have many benefits, but there are a few limitations as well. Support groups do not constitute formal therapeutic or medical treatment, and are not run by licensed mental health professionals, so some people may opt for group therapy or individual therapy instead. Additionally, support groups can depend on the other participants, so a disruptive individual has the potential to mar the group dynamic, and the anecdotal information shared may sometimes be unhelpful or inaccurate. Because it is a group setting, confidentiality can be more difficult to guard and participants receive less personalized attention than they would in an individual therapy session.
