The Houston Center for Valued Living (HCFVL) provides comprehensive services for individuals grappling with a range of concerns, including Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder ( OCD), various phobias (such as animal phobia, needle phobia, and driving phobia), Agoraphobia, Panic Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder / Excessive Worrying, Social Anxiety, and those facing challenges in the transition to adulthood. These services fall under the category of Intensive Outpatient or IOP. Our IOP services are tailored for individuals who haven’t achieved the desired outcomes from meeting with a therapist once or twice a week. Our clinicians offer a compassionate therapeutic environment, where they work with you one-on-one, in 3-hour blocks, 3 to 5 days a week to collaboratively address your specific treatment needs. These sessions can be conducted either in-person or virtually. IOP proves particularly valuable for those transitioning from residential or inpatient treatment, individuals taking school or work leave, or those in need of more substantial support than what weekly outpatient therapy provides.

This group is structured using my workbook, "A 90-Day Treatment Plan For OCD: How To Out-Think Your OCD". This robust treatment program utilizes daily, weekly, monthly, and annual calendar plans that increase slowly in intensity as your coping skills develop. It is structured in a way that helps you not only learn the system but apply the techniques effectively to immediately weaken your OCD symptoms, starting from day 1 to day 90 and beyond! When developing your weekly treatment plan, you can choose from a menu of choices in each category.

Ordered Steps to Recovery's Batterers Intervention and Prevention Program meets the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and CJAD guidelines to provide in-person services. Our (24 week) BIPP Program is designed to help batterers understand their actions and how they alone can control their behavior and bring social change necessary to end battering and increase victim safety so that they can live life free from violence. We cover a variety of topics including honesty, accountability, non-threatening behavior, negotiation and fairness, partnership, sexual respect and many others. BIPP is not anger management.

I love helping people with OCD, athletes under pressure to perform, and men whose lives and relationships are unraveling because of video games. Each of these areas resonate with me in different ways, and I have so much compassion for people going through these challenges. As someone who has personally experienced OCD, I understand, in a very real sense, how debilitating it can be. I know what it’s like to have a part of your brain whispering to you, “I can’t feel this way…I must do something to make the feeling go away, or something bad will happen.” I also know what it is like to go through treatment and get better!

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Support Groups

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
