Women's Issues Support Groups in New York, NY

The purpose of this group is multifaceted: to provide access to a safe, supportive space for dialogue around topics that may otherwise feel challenging to be vulnerable about; to connect with, be empowered by, and learn from other individuals navigating similar journeys to yours; and to explore ways in which you can reclaim pleasure by prioritizing your sexual wellbeing beyond pain. This group is for cis women/vulva owners ages 24-35 who experience pain with sex. This will be a closed group of 6-7 participants; once all members have joined, we will no longer accept additional participants.

Sexuality, intimacy & relationship dynamics play a key role in our lives, and yet, so many people are afraid and hesitant to talk about these topics - our therapists are not those people. As psychotherapists and sex therapists, we work to give you a safe space to talk through and develop coping skills for issues involving your sexual and mental health. Opening up and going to therapy can be scary and difficult, but we strive to make it a worthwhile experience for everyone who comes to see me. We challenge o0ur clients but also support them in living their most authentic lives, and always provide a non-judgmental, listening ear.

You've focused so much on career (and successfully so) that some of the other major pieces of life that you just assumed would fall into place have...well...they just HAVEN'T. I founded The Keely Group (Online Therapy NYC) in 2016 to offer virtual to people whose lives "look great on paper" but are missing something important. Perhaps that's a great romantic partner or close friendships; maybe it's some relief from the chronic (albeit high-functioning) anxiety that keeps you up at night or some balance so as to enjoy the parts of your life that really are great. Regardless, we can help.

Girl - that mom life got you twisted? Are you stuck in an ineffective communication loop with your partner? Are you fighting against intergenerational trauma, making you feel overwhelmed with parenting? Do you have a hard time setting boundaries with family and friends because you don't want to "be mean"? As a mom myself, I know all too well about these struggles - the mental load, weaponized incompetence from our partners, the daydreaming about different decisions. We all need help sometimes. Let me help you.

I am a Psychotherapist, Life Coach, and Consultant. In a career that began twenty-five years ago in the Middle East, now established in NY, I have seen clients from every conceivable background who have sought nurturing guidance to face trauma, anxiety, grief and sadness. Often, whether working with persons suffering from loss or separation, abuse victims, veterans, refugees, or families of substance abusers, I have witnessed that moment of clarity in a client when they realize there is actually hope for a better, more satisfying life. This, I believe, is the essence of therapy and I strive to smooth the path towards and beyond it.

I help people sort through parts of life that feel 'stuck' and work to identify skills to move forward. In particular, my work has focused on helping people improve their relationships with food, their bodies, and the culture that has dictated the most harmful elements of this relationship. I have training in both psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral modalities, and my practice leans into values-driven Acceptance and Commitment therapy. I welcome clients from all identities, and make space to address the impact of explicit and internalized biases.

Putting yourself first does not come easily to everyone. However, it is actually the number one action you can take for a happy and successful life. I know how challenging it can be to prioritize yourself, since you were taught from an early age that others’ needs were more important than yours. When you attempt to put yourself first, you are considered “selfish." When you attempt to speak up you are considered “difficult.” If you are often made to feel wrong for having needs, and you are unable to set boundaries with others, then how can you expect to trust yourself enough to feel good, and respect yourself?

Symptoms related to menopause can negatively impact our relationships and functioning. Yet, finding support can be difficult because of the myths and stereotypes surrounding menopause. Whether you are perimenopausal or menopausal, you will benefit from this support group. Protecting yourself from pain by trying not to feel it only causes more pain. Do you distract yourself from uncomfortable feelings by over-working, eating or drinking too much, shopping, or dating? Much unhappiness is created by no longer useful coping devices. Avoiding feelings like anger, shame, regret and powerlessness, closes off access to informative parts of you. In our work together, I utilize practical tools, not just theory, to help you identify and remain connected to your feelings. Staying connected to yourself while relating to others allows for loving in healthy ways and feeling loved and valued by others.

My practice focuses on women's mental health/ fertility / pregnancy / postpartum (incl. new dads & LGBTQ families), grief (more specifically early mother loss, and pregnancy loss), and relationship issues. Throughout our lives, we're constantly relating to one another, and building new experiences from these relationships. Unfortunately, relationships can also often feel unfulfilling, or make us feel neglected. They can bring on feelings of loss and disconnection. Then, life in general starts to feel unfulfilling. This can be changed. Psychotherapy, where the fit between patient-therapist is right, can be an immensely powerful tool.

Women's Issues Support Groups

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
