My specialties include working with individuals with anxiety and depression.
Video on Website Link - not currently accepting new clients- I believe life should be a lot easier then it is. We all get pushed past our limits that challenge who we think we are. The pressure changes us into different people. How do we get past reacting to life and get on to living life intentionally? The answer is not easy, because there are many factors that fracture our attention, steal our resources, and prevent progress. My job is to help change these factors to set you up for success and aid in defining what success means for you.

Mindfulness Meditation helps us to reconnect with ourselves through our hectic lifestyles. Although mindfulness appears to be fairly easy, it can be quite challenging. But no worries... I will guide you in how this particular meditation is done and how to overcome the challenges. This particular type of meditation has numerous research studies showing it to be exceptionally researched in the reduction of anxiety and pain issues. I will also talk about aromatherapy that can be included to help facilitate the changes that will occur and I work with you to what may be beneficial for you.

My passion is in working with individuals and couples in need of resolving issues that create anxiety, such as transitional periods of life, intimate relationships, family challenges, work related issues, social relationships or the death of a loved one.
Addressing challenges in our personal life is not easy. While a common reaction to difficulties and challenges is to attempt to avoid them, it seldom solves the problem. Friends can help with some struggles in life, while other challenges need unbiased, emotional support from a professional. I utilize compassion and practical feedback to help you effectively address these difficulties and challenges. My style of therapy utilizes an eclectic approach to personalize and tailor the therapy to your needs. I help individuals and couples recognize and build on strengths to attain growth and help facilitate change to enrich your life.

Being a teen girl is a conflicting experience. Pressure to be perfect is exhausting, while the feelings of being "not enough" and constant self-judging are pervasive. The desire to fit in is overwhelming. Through engaging, creative, hands-on exercises, teens discover and experience the difference between fitting in and belonging. This group also gives young women the opportunity to develop their own definitions of trust and courage, practice self-compassion, tap into their authenticity, identify their personal values, and engage in their lives and relationships from a place of worthiness. We will incorporate Art, Yoga, and Discussion!

I graduated from the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Social work in 2008, and have since pursued Certifications in Addictions, Self-Compassion, & the work of Dr. Brené Brown. What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
