Moving through life repeating the same patterns in relationships can be incredibly frustrating. Dealing with a relentless inner critic, struggling to get away from constant worries about if you're "doing it right," or attempting to heal the disconnect within or with loved ones can all create a significant amount of dis-ease in our lives. Having been a psychotherapist for close to fifteen years I am honored to be a consistent, objective and inquisitive presence for the individuals I get to work with. If you are struggling with sticky life-patterns, challenging relationships, or are going through a major transition, I'd love to help.

Individual therapy is a wonderful tool for navigating life in recovery. However, we don't live in a vacuum. Group therapy is particularly useful for exploring and changing unhelpful relational patterns in real time and creating meaningful connection that positively impacts life outside of group. This group is designed for men in recovery to come together in a mindful way. This is a closed group for men who are dedicated to staying clean/sober who want a safe space to grow through connection. Although this group is for men in recovery, all topics are welcome and encouraged.

Above all, you are welcome here. If you are struggling with early recovery, substance abuse/addiction, relationships, unresolved trauma, anxiety, depression, or all of the above, you've come to the right place. I don't believe in "fixing" you, because I do not see you as inherently wrong or broken. I see wounds that need care and mending, hearts that deserve hope and joy, and people that long for meaningful connection and love. Together, we can explore the roots of your problems so you may be free of their shackles.

As a somatic psychotherapist, I focus on supporting adults who are grappling with the very real, very human and very complex experiences of chronic stress, trauma, and grief. My approach is rooted in mindfulness, somatics and neuroscience through my training in Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems, Brainspotting, Yoga and Meditation. From this lens, I offer a creative synthesis of tools - tailored to each individual - that are further enhanced by in-depth work in psychodynamic therapy, somatic parts work, and relational-attachment dynamics.

Our 12-week program is designed to give extra clinical and 12-step support during the early weeks of recovery when the risk of relapse is highest. Next Step Recovery's IOP uses a three-pronged approach that includes intensive group therapy, individual counseling, and 12-step immersion education to support long-term recovery. While offering many of the same benefits, our program goes beyond traditional IOPs by being housed within our transitional living program. Upon completion of our 12-week intensive program, residents continue to receive recovery support through our transitional living program.

While being human carries with it difficulties and pain, there is joy and goodness, healing and wisdom waiting for each of us. I love sitting with folks, supporting each person on their highly unique journey of self-discovery. My intention is to hold a safe, grounded space where curiosity, gentleness, and courage might arise with more ease. Where learning how to know oneself authentically becomes an adventure of the soul. I am deeply interested in understanding how our history shapes us and the ways we show up in the world. I love nurturing folks' spiritual quests and find Nature a refuge and wise teacher.

You're just not feeling like yourself. You've been feeling anxious, irritated and out of sorts. In some ways, your life is pretty much where you hoped it would be, but on the inside you're feeling scared and a little lost. Maybe even lonely. You're a leader, and you juggle a lot. You're the "I can do hard things" kind of person... But you're not feeling much better. You've got little patience for your partner, your kids, your friends, and you're losing your focus at work. You want better ways to cope with these feelings and life's stress. And more than that, you want to grow beyond the pain, and the past, and find inner strength.

Like so many people I have faced unanticipated storms. Following a devastating divorce, I took a sabbatical for one year and I drove from Virginia to Alaska alone. I had the opportunity to live in the home of a Reiki master, an experience that shifted my focus from using solely traditional psychotherapy to incorporating energy work. Energy work became the foundation for incorporating a new type of therapy with my clients. I then realized that prayer is energy and I came to strongly believe in the healing power of prayer as a way to assist my clients in healing.

The DBT group offers a set of skills to help individuals live a more centered life. Members learn how to live more fully in the present moment (mindfulness), how to have more effective relationships with others (interpersonal effectiveness), how to identify and manage emotions (emotion regulation), and strategies to help effectively survive an emotional crisis (distress tolerance). For those who struggle to control their feelings and who desire skills to manage intense emotions and thoughts. Individuals with anxiety, depression, impulsive behaviors (self-harm, binging/purging) and who are struggling with building a life worth living are great for this group.

NOTE: Currently accepting new clients into ONLINE groups for those who want to explore relating - scroll to bottom for details. You're curious about who you are, how you view the world. You're uncertain of how to connect with others... groups of people can feel overwhelming. You may have been called “ too sensitive” in the past. I consider therapy to be, at core, about relationship. So much of our trauma as humans is interpersonal. Psychotherapy has the transformational potential to practice again (or perhaps for the first time) associating human relationships with safety rather than threat.

I look at your concerns in the context of your childhood experiences, your current family and your life environments. These patterns repeat themselves. People pick up on cues that communicate what you expect out of them and what they expect out of you. These patterns are no accident, you create them! The good news is you can change them! You are like a magnet, and I help you identify what you're attracting and we change your patterns of attraction to healthy ones. It takes practice, but it can be done, and it will affect the rest of your life!

FAQs - About Group Therapy and Support Groups

How can I find a support group in Asheville?

Search for nearby support groups by inputting your city, zip code, or the name of the group into the search bar. From there, you can filter to find a group that suits your needs, whether you are looking for support for a teenager, a group that focuses on a specific issue, such as depression, or a particular program type, such as one geared toward developing social skills. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

How does group therapy work?

Therapy groups are led by one or more therapists and serve to help people process their experiences and learn from others who understand their challenges firsthand. They can be based on a specific issue, such as addiction, grief, physical illnesses, parenting, and caregiving. They can involve a specific type of program or therapy, such as a social skills group or CBT group. They can also be specific to a particular population or community, such as teens or LGBTQ.

Support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous, also focus on a specific issue, but are typically led by members with lived experiences and are less structured than therapy groups. Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.

What are the benefits of group therapy?

Support groups help connect people with shared challenges or physical and mental health conditions. In a group setting, participants can receive support and feedback from peers and can acquire new skills, strategies and perspectives by listening to one another. Discussing your experience with someone who also has a cancer diagnosis, or whose son also struggles with addiction, for example, can help you feel less alone, reduce distress, find empathy and connection, and learn practical or medical information that has helped others. Group therapy can also be a more affordable option than individual therapy and just as effective.

Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?

Support groups can be deeply valuable for both emotional support and/or treatment outcomes. It’s difficult to make a blanket statement on efficacy due to the many different types of support groups and conditions treated, but group therapy has been found to be just as effective as individual therapy in establishing long-term abstinence for conditions such as substance abuse, addiction and alcohol abuse.

How much does group therapy cost?

Group counseling is typically less expensive than individual counseling, with each session costing on average between $60 to $75. Meanwhile, individual therapy sessions can run anywhere from $100 to $200 and up, even after insurance. It is possible to find low-cost group therapy options and many therapists offer group sessions free of charge.

Does insurance cover group therapy?

As with individual therapy, many insurance companies do offer coverage for group therapy sessions. However, the coverage varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider. Individuals are encouraged to check with their insurance providers to verify coverage.

How long does group therapy last?

The length of a support group session is often one hour but can fall anywhere between 45 minutes and two hours. The amount of time that people remain in a support group varies based on their specific needs and goals and the type of therapy. Some individuals may seek a shorter-term group, such as a bereavement group, that may last between six and 20 weeks. Some may seek a longer-term group that lasts for a year or indefinitely.

What are the limitations of support groups?

Support groups have many benefits, but there are a few limitations as well. Support groups do not constitute formal therapeutic or medical treatment, and are not run by licensed mental health professionals, so some people may opt for group therapy or individual therapy instead. Additionally, support groups can depend on the other participants, so a disruptive individual has the potential to mar the group dynamic, and the anecdotal information shared may sometimes be unhelpful or inaccurate. Because it is a group setting, confidentiality can be more difficult to guard and participants receive less personalized attention than they would in an individual therapy session.
