Support Groups in Chicago, IL

This is a virtual support group for adults (18+) who are navigating the death of parent or parental figure and are looking for a supportive space to process their grieving journey with others who are going through a similar experience. The goal of this group is to provide a safe, warm environment to reflect on and share personal experiences with grief; process the death of parental figures; and work towards finding meaning in and through these losses. The majority of our time together will be a blend of individual and group reflection focused on emotional processing.

I see my role in therapy as empowering and supporting you in identifying and using your unique identities, stories, and strengths to navigate life stressors, build self-esteem, and feel better in your mind and body; I center my work from a social justice lens to explore how our communities and systems have shaped these identities and stories. My experience includes supporting adults navigating a variety of life transitions, including death-loss, college/career, sober curiosity and relationships. I approach therapy from a client-centered, strengths-based, and trauma-informed lens, cultivating a safe and nonjudgmental environment.

Each group is structured after Marsha Linehan’s Dialectical Behavioral Therapy treatment. Individuals who participate in DBT groups must also participate in individual therapy. Each group consists of four modules, including Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness skills. Each module lasts six to eight weeks and individuals are asked to commit to treatment one module at a time. These groups aim to support individuals who experience emotion dysregulation and lack effective coping skills.

Options is a discussion series based on the principles of harm reduction. Rather than focusing on abstinence or sobriety, this semi-structured discussion series will support men who want to change their relationship with alcohol and/or other drugs. Through conversation and activities, this series will consider each person's history of substance use and will support each man as he redefines his relationship with substances and establishes personal goals for use.

We often seek therapy because ways we’ve learned to navigate the world aren’t working the way they used to or the way we’d like them to. Sometimes these strategies cause us pain and sometimes they cause pain to others. Our work involves uncovering strategies we’ve learned to survive in the world and understanding where they come from. Once we understand their origin and function, we can develop awareness of when they arise in the present and make choices to navigate differently.

While there are many quick-fix therapies in the world of mental health treatment, I believe that depth-based work is essential to creating change that truly sticks. As such, I view it as important for us to develop a strong, trusting & meaningful working relationship early in our work together & for us to use our relationship as the foundation for our successful work together. One of the gifts that therapy offers is an opportunity to be truly heard & supported. That foundation of support can be a powerful addition to one’s life when it is effectively developed between a client & therapist. Every client is different.

My aim for my clients is to gain an attitude of self-compassion and an empowered mindset. I believe that, generally, we are all doing the best we can with what we have. Unfortunately, sometimes what we have are old stories or traumas deeply embedded in our minds and bodies that make it difficult to find fulfillment in ourselves and in our relationships. Together, we can create distance from such burdensome threats to our current well-being. Using a relationship-focused, holistic therapeutic approach, I work to help my clients untether from fears and allow them to reach their full capacity to connect, to love, and to live.

- Currently only accepting group clients, please email to inquire! - I specialize in working with those who've experienced religious trauma and childhood or developmental trauma. I believe in the power of integration- that ALL parts of you deserve love and compassion. Together, we will address feelings, needs, beliefs, and the body's own wisdom, while also seeing issues in the context of the systems in which you exist. I work best with those wanting to be challenged to dig deeper and understand their interior worlds, and use an overall psychodynamic therapy approach.

Our Anger management groups are designed to help individuals to learn to recognize signs that you're becoming angry, and taking action to calm down and deal with the situation in a productive way. Anger is frequently a result of frustration, or of feeling blocked or thwarted from something the person feels is important. Anger can also be a defensive response to underlying fear or feelings of vulnerability or powerlessness. Groups are 8 weeks, 2 hours per session. There is a fee associated with this group.

I honor the courage it takes for you to have made it to this point in your journey. I work to facilitate a space of curiosity that leads to deeper insight, awareness, and self-compassion to help bring meaningful change where it is needed. I believe that resilience, the capacity to recover from adversity, is a key ability for mental and emotional health. Building this capacity is a healing practice. I use resiliency skills in the “here and now” during our sessions to build healthy habits for sustainable wellness. I also value collaboration, and often invite feedback to ensure your voice and purpose is at the center of the work,

The "Transformative Creative Writing Group" is an energetic, dynamic psycho-educational group that helps individuals use writing as a powerful tool to aid in personal reflection, self-cultivation, creativity, and healing. You may have something you wish to share or "vent." You may need to "process" something inwardly or use writing to aid in visualizing the wording that feels lacking. Matt is heavily biased that one's experiencing the wonders of creating and reading material which resonates deeply within us is as much a transpersonal experience as anything else. It can also be transformative!

The crux of my approach is simple, but versatile: I use anything and everything available to make breakthroughs possible. We all do better with an expansive toolkit. EMDR for "stuckness" / trauma and Gottman methods for couples to repair & connect. (Well worth YouTubing either for a sense of them.) Once we understand each other and you are insight-equipped, we'll put insight into action. But in ways that feel authentic to your personal experience of things. Clients often report that my approachable, humorous, "very human" style makes therapy a much more effective experience even when exploring difficult content.

Therapy can be a process of unfolding for individuals and families. Whether deepening insight and self awareness, increasing compassion, or finding new ways to address life, the process of readying one's self for change can start in the quiet, reflective space of therapy. I provide in person and virtual psychotherapy and consultations to residents of Illinois and Indiana. While my therapeutic approach is eclectic, I rely on a psychodynamic understanding of the lifespan, third wave behavioral approaches to change, and I center the importance of self-integration.

Modern life presents a number of challenges for adults and families. It can be difficult to balance all of the conflicting demands, especially if we are also trying to care for others or carrying the weight of past traumas or other unresolved issues. This can lead to increasing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and anger, and can interfere with the relationships we value and need. None of us are perfect, but we all deserve the chance to live a life consistent with our values and goals.

Sometimes painful thoughts and emotions take on a life of their own. I work with you to improve your mental health and overcome life challenges with goal-focused strategies.

Did you know that some people who grew up in religious purity culture have symptoms that are similar to people who experienced childhood sexual abuse? The impact of a sexually shaming culture can be subtle, but leave deep wounds. This group focuses on the process of leaving purity culture in order to reclaim our bodies and heal from sexual shame and trauma. We are open to female-identified people who are still engaging in religion, as well as those who have moved away from it. This will be a process focused group beginning in November and running for eight weeks.

At the heart of my work, I approach therapy from a relational, psychodynamic therapy model, which means I believe the relationship between the client and therapist can be a transformative component in the growth process. I am a LPC combining modern neurobiology with holistic somatic healing, the psychodynamic therapeutic relationship, and body-based practices to create an experiential awakening on a bodily, psychological and emotional level. I work from a somatic-centered therapeutic approach, meaning that I believe that the body tells the stories and narratives. For more information, my website is: www.kellypastori.com

I feel privileged to be a psychologist and my therapeutic style reflects this appreciation. Building a trusting, collaborative relationship is at the forefront of my work, though I'm aware this looks differently with each of my clients. I see the process of change as occurring in the context of the therapeutic relationship and by exploring patterns that may be preventing one from living a fulfilling existence. Through the discovery of these patterns, we can begin to understand how to live life more genuinely. I incorporate various therapeutic approaches and interventions, which speaks to our unique needs.
