I focus on loss, both death-related and non- death-related. I have devoted my work to supporting grievers, explaining the nuanced and complex grief process, as well as identifying strategies to help navigate the new abnormal. I also work with clients at end-of-life to help them and their families talk about what comes next. Whether you have experienced the death of a sibling, parent or parent-figure, spouse/partner, an adult child, friend or colleague or pregnancy loss, or are struggling with the loss of identity, loss of a job, loss of a romantic relationship, retirement, or other life transitions, I'm here for it.

Grief is the sacred work of moving through loss and painful change. When we gather together in our grief, we find freedom and build resiliency. This circle is for all kinds of grief - from the loss of a loved one or a pet, to the loss of some way life was supposed to be, to the sadness and anxiety connected with the climate crisis. Circles will include meditations, sound healing, creative expression and embodied rituals that will help us de-isolate our sorrow, and find the freedom to live forward. With a special focus on mindfulness, I greatly value using creative expression, spiritual rituals and sound therapy as profound tools for transforming the pain of loss and transitions.
I deeply respect your wanting to address something in your life that keeps you from feeling happy and whole. Maybe it's a recent event or loss, or a troubled relationship, or maybe a past pain that continues to hurt. Perhaps you are feeling a lack of purpose, or a lack of connection with who you really are. As a compassionate listener and guide, I will sit with you as you explore a deeper self-understanding, reflect back to you your insights, discuss options and goals, then assist you in designing an effective path of healing and change. For those living with breast cancer, I am honored to offer my support as a fellow thriver.

I help others manage and resolve difficulties of the heart - love, loss, and work during significant life changes/transitions; e.g., career/job change, death/illness in family, divorce, addiction/recovery, etc. I provide high-quality professional assessment and counseling/psychotherapy to people who have not accessed or have had prior unsatisfactory experiences with psychotherapy. I also do "second opinions" for anyone experiencing therapy stalemate and/or major change. During change, the terrain is stormy, bumpy, skiddy and deep. Many feel angry--a disguise to the depth of fear(s). Anxiety ensues and one doubts whether the "new" is possible.

Grieving is a process of learning how to live in your changed world and integrating the loss into this confusing and sometimes scary new life.
Everyone suffers many losses in their lifetime. Grief is our reaction to loss based on what we have learned from childhood, what we have experienced as adults, and how we have chosen to respond. We then struggle to determine how to evolve and change. The grieving process does not follow a prescribed path. There are many commonalities to the grieving process, yet the journey is unique to the individual. Loss is typically defined as a death, but may take many forms: a relationship, a job, a pet. I specialize in many types of Grief and Transitions including Anticipatory. Absent, Complicated, Disenfranchised, Chronic, Delayed and Inhibited.

Everyday I am humbled by working with those who have the courage to look in the mirror and work on themselves. I view psychotherapy as an opportunity for growth no matter where you are in your life; whether seeking support in a time of crisis, suffering from a mental illness, working on relationships, or you are simply curious about who you are and how your mind works. My treatment approach is rooted in psychodynamic and relational frameworks although I tailor my technique to each client. I value change beyond symptom resolution but also to increase self awareness and individual growth.

In a career that began twenty-five years ago in the Middle East, now established in NY, I have seen clients from every conceivable background who have sought nurturing guidance to face trauma, anxiety, grief and sadness. Often, whether working with persons suffering from loss or separation, abuse victims, veterans, refugees, or families of substance abusers, I have witnessed that moment of clarity in a client when they realize there is actually hope for a better, more satisfying life. This, I believe, is the essence of therapy and I strive to smooth the path towards and beyond it.

Grief Support Groups

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
