Communication problems and disputes are common among the adults in such situations. This group will assist blended families in building the tools necessary to coparent as a team with dual households. Skills to be developed include: Communicating fairly, respectfully and with a professional tone; Effective negotiation; Preventing loyalty conflicts in children; Methods of navigating holidays; and Negotiating schedule changes. The content of this group can be modified for individual parents; coparenting counseling with both parents in attendance; and to include stepparents.

Healing after separation/ divorce.
My passion is helping individuals and couples create deeper levels of emotional and sexual intimacy. In adults, romantic love can only be truly enjoyed when partners are able to feel safe and secure in turning to each other for their needs. My role as a therapist is to create a safe and supportive space where you can explore unfamiliar and uncomfortable emotional experiences, without feeling blame, shame or judgment.

When going through a major life altering event such as divorce, isn't it a comfort to speak with someone who has "been there, done that?" Angry, bitter, sad, embarrassed, overwhelmed, afraid, lonely...? You don't have to suffer the emotional consequences of divorce alone. While personal experiences may differ, the anxiety and loneliness are equal. You will learn from others' mistakes and triumphs in how to move forward with life after loss. Issues addressed include: custody, parenting, communicating with an ex, financial burdens, dating, coping with negative emotions, dealing with extended family and friends .

As a licensed clinical psychologist, I recognize that life and relationships can prove to be challenging. I appreciate the courage it takes for one to share personal concerns and strive for life change, therefore I aim to provide a safe and respectful therapeutic environment. I strongly believe in the power of therapy as a means of improving the quality of ones' life through the following: developing greater insight and understanding of ones' concerns, exploring alternative perspectives, reduction of symptoms, adopting alternative coping strategies, improving self esteem, and strengthening communication skills.

My approach to therapy is based on the belief that behaviors are a function of our relations with others. Thus, a person's environment and history influences one's sense of self and the way we express ourselves as part of a group and as individuals. I try to learn from my client's experiences to develop a better understanding of who they are, how they developed their sense of self, their worldview, and behavior.

Divorce Support Groups

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioral, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
