AIC's Abuse Intervention Groups provide an accountable and supportive setting for men to understand the role of male socialization, identify the ways they have been abusive or controlling of others, examine and change their beliefs about abuse, and practice acceptable alternatives to abuse. We respectfully confront denial and pro-abuse beliefs while supporting making non-abusive choices and embracing more pro-social beliefs. We make consistent use of evidence based practices, including motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral interventions, role plays, and the research of John Gottman. Groups on Wednesday's and Thursday's. Please call for time and availability.

Our trauma can leave us with feelings of shame, resentment, and guilt. When we don't take the time for our own recovery and healing, we can find ourselves becoming stressed and overwhelmed. We become unrecognizable to ourselves and disconnected from our own needs. Our physical health is impacted. We experience spiraling thoughts and an inability to relax. Our anger and sadness are easily triggered. We sabotage our important relationships. We lack trust and fear intimacy. We find ourselves feeling undeserving of the goodness life has to offer.
Allies in Change's Men's Anger Management Program provides an accountable and supportive setting for men to understand the root of their anger and how to better control it. Our Anger Management Program is 12 weeks in length. We offer a separate long-term anger management program you may choose to transfer to before or after completing this program. This class is facilitated by highly qualified and experienced counselors.

After leaving the military, veterans sometimes experience difficulties transitioning back to civilian life, especially if exposed to combat while serving. Veterans may experience problems managing emotions and dealing with negative thoughts about themselves or their military experience. Our group utilizes tools from several evidence-based practices to navigate these challenges and foster a safe environment for veterans to connect with others who have shared their experience. Our open-group model of 90-minute sessions is co-facilitated by a doctoral psychology intern and licensed psychologist experienced in working with active and retired military. I specialize in helping adult men with trauma and PTSD overcome patterns that keep them feeling stuck so they can experience greater satisfaction in their lives and relationships. Trauma affects everyone differently, but social stigma and expectations for men to be unemotional and strong often lead to feelings of weakness that prevent men from seeking help when needed. Men sometimes externalize symptoms with substance use, anger, relationship conflict, social isolation, and workaholism. My goal is creating a safe space for you to address these patterns and move toward a greater sense of control, connectedness, and wellbeing.

Anger Management Support Groups
How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.
How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.
Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.
What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
