Support Groups in 92823
My husband and I co-lead ongoing process groups. Each group consists of a maximum of eight high-functioning, self-reflective men and women. The members utilize the group to explore their unique personal dynamics in a supportive environment. Group work can be one of the most enriching and powerful therapeutic experiences available. For further information and available openings, please contact me or my co-leader (Dr. Michael Russell - please refer to his Psychology Today profile).
My clients come from many walks of life but have one thing in common - they would like to improve their overall quality of life. Perhaps the wounds from their past or stressors from their present are adversely impacting their lives. My goal is to work collaboratively with my clients to improve their current level of functioning. My practice includes working with adults, college students, adolescents, couples, and families. I also co-lead groups with my husband who is also a psychotherapist, and I work with master's level and doctorate interns who are completing their therapy/supervison hours for licensing.
This group is for reasonably well functioning and "psychologically minded" persons, typically studying to become therapists or persons currently in the helping professions. I co-lead this with my wife, Dr. Valerie Russell, Clinical Psychologist (see her Psychology Today profile).

I mainly work with clients who are "psychologically minded" and interested in examining long-standing personality traits that may get in the way of having fulfilling personal and professional lives. Often my clients are therapists or aspiring therapists. I am an Emeritus Professor and a "Research Psychoanalyst." That means I have a PhD in Philosophy and have also trained in counseling and acquired a PsyD in Psychoanalysis. What I offer draws from this mix of backgrounds. I most like working with individuals (and couples and groups) who want to be challenged on both an intellectual and an emotional level.

We all face difficult issues and need someone to help us through these challenging times. Struggling with a relationship, anxiety, depression, bipolar, addiction, substance abuse, co-occurring disorders, work/school issues, life changes, marital, domestic and family issues or any other issues we are here to help you. 12-Step meetings may not be enough to overcome the underlying issues that lead to substance use and other disorders. If you're looking for extra support and guidance, we look forward to helping you achieve your goals. We offer a safe and supportive environment with an empathic therapist who understands.
We live in perhaps the most challenging time ever for getting a good night's sleep. Stress, overwork, high expectations, busyness, fear, anxiety, lights and screens: so much is working against us. In my years of clinical work, I've rarely met a person NOT managing some difficulties around sleep. This group utilizes CBT-I, the treatment approach that is by far the most effective for troubled sleep and insomnia. This group begins May 31 and will last 8-weeks. It will provide a detailed program for improving your sleep.
Throughout our lives, we carry within us the voices, the gaze, acceptance or disapproval, the expectations, and the praise or criticism of those who have raised us and occupied our lives. Therapy can help us discover and clarify these powerful experiences and grow in our understanding of how they motivate us, giving us freedom to make more authentic decisions in our daily lives. I view therapy as an opportunity to heal, receive support, solve problems, improve relationships, and escape problems and patterns that seem to reappear over time.
As a nation, within States, Cities, Neighborhoods and even within our own families, people are facing many challenges that carry a heavy emotional load. In particular one is body autonomy, another equality rights. It can feel overwhelming, which is why I am offering a way for individuals to have a safe space to process, and get much needed support. The group will be assessed for fit by me and no more than 8 people per group. Please reach out if you are interested!

Change can be stressful. LIFE can be stressful! Sometimes, the transition might be the birth of a child, a new job, a new relationship or it could involve the loss of a loved one, or coping with a family member being ill. Online process groups for people impacted by religious harm and trauma resulting from organized religion. One aspect of this is "deconstruction": not only leaving the beliefs, but the loss of so many relationships that have been so central to our lives for so long, the regrets of years of life that could have been spent differently. Groups will meet online 1x/week and there will be separate groups for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. I do offer free consultation if you're interested in joining.

This group's focus is for people with physical disabilities ( different abilities) wanting support with sexual health. People are quite diverse with their different abilities. For some, it might be obvious and others, they are looked at as "healthy" but have chronic pain, injuries or other issues with their bodies that are not seen. Either way, it can be frustrating to not have a healthy sex life, a libido, and interest and even more difficult to ask for your needs to be understood and met. My goal is to offer a safe place for that support.

FAQs - About Group Therapy and Support Groups
How can I find a support group in 92823?
Search for nearby support groups by inputting your city, zip code, or the name of the group into the search bar. From there, you can filter to find a group that suits your needs, whether you are looking for support for a teenager, a group that focuses on a specific issue, such as depression, or a particular program type, such as one geared toward developing social skills. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.
How does group therapy work?
Therapy groups are led by one or more therapists and serve to help people process their experiences and learn from others who understand their challenges firsthand. They can be based on a specific issue, such as addiction, grief, physical illnesses, parenting, and caregiving. They can involve a specific type of program or therapy, such as a social skills group or CBT group. They can also be specific to a particular population or community, such as teens or LGBTQ.
Support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous, also focus on a specific issue, but are typically led by members with lived experiences and are less structured than therapy groups. Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.

Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.
What are the benefits of group therapy?
Support groups help connect people with shared challenges or physical and mental health conditions. In a group setting, participants can receive support and feedback from peers and can acquire new skills, strategies and perspectives by listening to one another. Discussing your experience with someone who also has a cancer diagnosis, or whose son also struggles with addiction, for example, can help you feel less alone, reduce distress, find empathy and connection, and learn practical or medical information that has helped others. Group therapy can also be a more affordable option than individual therapy and just as effective.
Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?
Support groups can be deeply valuable for both emotional support and/or treatment outcomes. It’s difficult to make a blanket statement on efficacy due to the many different types of support groups and conditions treated, but group therapy has been found to be just as effective as individual therapy in establishing long-term abstinence for conditions such as substance abuse, addiction and alcohol abuse.
How much does group therapy cost?
Group counseling is typically less expensive than individual counseling, with each session costing on average between $60 to $75. Meanwhile, individual therapy sessions can run anywhere from $100 to $200 and up, even after insurance. It is possible to find low-cost group therapy options and many therapists offer group sessions free of charge.
Does insurance cover group therapy?
As with individual therapy, many insurance companies do offer coverage for group therapy sessions. However, the coverage varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider. Individuals are encouraged to check with their insurance providers to verify coverage.
How long does group therapy last?
The length of a support group session is often one hour but can fall anywhere between 45 minutes and two hours. The amount of time that people remain in a support group varies based on their specific needs and goals and the type of therapy. Some individuals may seek a shorter-term group, such as a bereavement group, that may last between six and 20 weeks. Some may seek a longer-term group that lasts for a year or indefinitely.
What are the limitations of support groups?
Support groups have many benefits, but there are a few limitations as well. Support groups do not constitute formal therapeutic or medical treatment, and are not run by licensed mental health professionals, so some people may opt for group therapy or individual therapy instead. Additionally, support groups can depend on the other participants, so a disruptive individual has the potential to mar the group dynamic, and the anecdotal information shared may sometimes be unhelpful or inaccurate. Because it is a group setting, confidentiality can be more difficult to guard and participants receive less personalized attention than they would in an individual therapy session.
