Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Eric Newhouse is the author of two books: Alcohol: Cradle to Grave and Faces of Combat: PTSD and TBI. A retired editor of the Great Falls (Mont.) Tribune, Newhouse won the Pulitzer Prize for explanatory journalism in 2000 for a 12-part series of stories on the effects of alcoholism in Montana. He also served as a juror for the 2007 and 2008 Pulitzer Prizes.
Newhouse's stories on alcoholism have been honored by NAADAC, the Society of Addiction Professionals; the Research Society of Alcoholism; and the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers. ASAM, the American Society of Addiction Medicine, also presented Newhouse with its national media award in 2010 for his lifetime achievement.
Other honors include national journalism awards by the National Mental Health Association and by the National Council on Crime and Delinquency for a 13-part series of stories on troubled teens in 2001. And Gannett gave Newhouse its national "watchdog journalism" award in 2010 for his reporting on crime and justice on Montana's Indian reservations.
Newhouse has been a keynote speaker before the American Society of Newspaper Editors in New Orleans; NAADAC, the Association of Addiction Professionals in Washington, D.C., and in Boston; the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers in Scottsdale, Ariz.; Generations 2009 at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City; the 35th annual TAAP State Convention on Addiction Studies in San Antonio, Texas; the American Press Institute in Reston, Va.; and National Writers Workshops in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Hartford (Conn.), San Antonio, and Wichita (Kan.). He delivered the Lusk Lecture at South Dakota State University in 2003 and the Burleigh-Scripps Distinguished Lecture on Media Ethics at Marquette University in 2005. And he has participated on panels at the National Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University in New York City on several occasions.
Married with two grown daughters, two stepsons and three grandchildren, Newhouse holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin, a master's degree in international relations from the University of Maryland, and another master's degree in journalism from Columbia University, where he was also honored as an International Fellow.
